It’s been months since the day we stood above that empty grave that stunk of burnt flesh and secrets. All of us were dressed to the nines, one of us wearing a wedding dress, a day that was supposed to mark the beginning of a new adventure.

It marked the bitter end of our vengeance.

We have done things that have marked our souls for eternity.

But before we get there, we have to go back.

Back to where it all started.

The place I could find in my sleep.

Hollow Heights University in the macabre, somber seaside town of Ponderosa Springs.

A college for prestigious, wealthy children to receive the highest education. A town drowning in treachery and secrets that became our damnation.

But it wasn’t the forest surrounding the grounds or even the mysterious hidden mausoleum that haunted me.

It was them.

The ones that lurked in the night, things so wicked, so twisted, so evil, they would become the rulers of my nightmares.

The Hollow Boys.

One wrong move and I landed myself directly in their line of fire.

This is not a story about love, it is not a story of happy endings.

Love just happened to blossom in our sorrows, in our pain, our fear, our blood.

Every terrible thing they ever did, we watched, we helped, we loved them anyway.

Some run from their monsters, we fell in love with ours.

The Lies we Steal is the first book in the Hollow Boys series by Monty Jay. I have read all of Monty’s books and I fell in love with this enemies-to-lovers story, hard. I was warned it was going to be dark and that just made me want it more. I crave darkness and this book delivered.
Briar grew up a thief. She was trained to pickpocket, break into safes and do anything she had to to survive. And now she was in a different world. Hollow Heights U in Ponderosa Springs on the seaside of Oregon. She went from a girl living in a trailer park in Texas to a girl living in a dorm room in one of the most elite colleges in the country in one of the richest cities. She just wanted to be invisible and have a fresh start where nobody knew her name. It didn’t take long for that to go to s*it. The moment he locked eyes with hers, she knew he was trouble. And when they spoke, she knew she was f*cked. He was the exact kind of boy she needed to stay away from. He would bring her into the dark…
Alistair only cared about three people. Silas, Thatcher, and Rook. Three of the most loyal friends anyone could ask for. If you saw one one campus, there was another one next to them. Usually all four. Everyone is town knew The Hollow Boys, and everyone knew to stay out of their way. That was until her. Briar didn’t cower, she thrived in Alistair’s stare. From the moment she didn’t walk away from him, he knew she was different. He hated her for it. And after one night that changes everything, he was going to ruin her. The Hollow Boys were out for revenge and she wasn’t going to f*ck that up.
OMFG! This story is total badassery. From the boys to the girls involves. Four psychos, all with different personalities with one goal. I love Alistair and his intensity and loyalty. He may seem like he has a black soul but I guarantee you will fall. And Briar, she is a true badass boss. Together, these two are explosive! I also started to fall for the other boys. I have my favorite already. It was love at first read. Haha. I am excited about the next book after a little sneak peek. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my favorite series’.
Quotes:
He sheds his suit jacket, tossing it onto the desk, while he takes his time rolling his sleeves up to the elbows. All of this a part of the mental game he plays.
We were a good contrast, he and I. He was cold and calculated. I was instinctive and hot-blooded cruelty.
The perfect pair of sociopaths.
There was just something about Alistair Caldwell that made me panic. Something inside of him was so dark, so damned, that it called to the deepest parts of my soul.
“Can’t have you forgetting who you belong to. I told you Briar,” He breathes, “you’re mine.”
“I’m gonna rip that silver fucking spoon right out of your mouth just to feed you back all your territorial bullshit.”
“Little Thief, there is no spoon. I learned to lick wealth from knives.”
