From New York Times bestselling author
Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.
At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.
Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.
But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me
awake while he “entertained” them.
As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.
So, finally it was my turn.
When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my
door.

Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she
eventually fell asleep in his arms.
Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr.
Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.
After that night, we became friends.
He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.
But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.
Until one night we crossed the line.
Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.
I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.
I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into
any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.
He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”
Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

The Anti-Boyfriend is Penelope Ward’s newest standalone. I didn’t read the synopsis so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and that excites me even more! I just know once I start one of Penelope’s books I won’t want to put it down, and that definitely happened with Deacon and Carys story.

Carys and Deacon are neighbors. They have only crossed paths a few times in passing since she moved in. All that she knows about him is that he is gorgeous and lately that he enjoys the pleasure of company. At night. While she is trying to sleep. Apparently, the walls are line in this complex in the city. She wasn’t mad about it, he was a young single man in NYC but she did love her sleep especially when home with a baby 24/7. So, she tells him just that and to her surprise the conversation turns into the start of a beautiful and complicated friendship.

It’s a friendship that neither of them saw coming. They get each other. They surprise each other more every day. And to see Deacon with Sunny? So adorable!! Carys thinks so and Deacon shocks himself at how much these two mean to him. They are like family so when things cross a line, things get complicated. He doesn’t want to hurt them. She doesn’t want to lose him. Can they figure out a way to balance their friendship, feelings, and future?

Aw!! I love Deacon, Carys, and Sunny! They are too adorable, sweet, and complicated at the same time. It’s definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. I swooned. I cried. I laughed. I got frustrated. I wanted to slap someone. I wanted to hug them too. It totally had me swiping the pages faster and faster at the same time I wanted to savor it. It might just be my favorite Penelope book. I do say that a lot since I fall so hard. Every. Time.

Quotes:

As I watched him rock her back and forth, my ovaries felt like they were about to explode. This man was sexy when he wasn’t holding a baby. Now? Off the charts.

My knees shook as I sat down on the bed, feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement, the muscles between my legs giving new meaning to the term eager beaver. (*LOL)

“You look so beautiful it hurts, Carys.”

Blog Tour & Review – Temptation on Ocean Drive, Jennifer Probst

August 27, 2020 By

Temptation on Ocean Drive, A heart-stirring novel of unrequited love and second chances by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst is live!

Young widow Bella Sunshine-Caldwell is focused only on raising her daughter and running the family business, Sunshine Bridal. There’s no time for romance—especially with her fellow wedding planner, Gabe, whom she’s growing increasingly attracted to. He’s too enterprising to stay in Cape May for long, anyway. And too tall, dark, and handsome to be anything but a heartbreaker.

Every woman in town has her sights on Gabe Garcia. The only woman he has eyes for doesn’t seem interested. All he wants is to fall in love, be a father, and settle down. As he and Bella work together on a magical winter wedding, the distance between them closes, the nights grow warmer, and Bella might be seeing Gabe for who he really is: a man worth the effort.

But all it takes is a single rumor for these two hearts’ fragile love story to shatter. And now the happy ending Bella and Gabe hoped for is something they’re going to have to fight for.

Kara's Review

4.5 out of 5 stars

Temptation on Ocean Drive is second book in the Sunshine Sisters series by Jennifer Probst. We’ve met the Sunshine sisters and the men in their lives. They are so different, but work together at the family business perfectly. Bella lost her husband years ago and she’s raising her daughter by herself. She has her sisters for help and support and she’s not interested in dating. Gabe has worked with Bella and her sisters for years. He’s good at his job as a wedding planner and hiding his feelings for Bella. When they have to work on a wedding together things get a little tricky. Bella has tried not to work with Gabe. She thinks he’s a player with a different girl ever weekend. Gabe hates that people think that about him. He’s worked hard to get where he is and he’s still trying to escape his painful childhood. But working together softens Bella a little. She sees a side of Gabe she didn’t know was there. But it’s dangerous to think about him other than as a friend. She has her daughter to think about and she already loves him. Gabe has had a thing for Bella for a long time and when he sees and in he’s going to take it. She’s leery of his supposed reputation and has trust issues. He has issues with people only seeing his attractiveness. If they want to be more than friends, Bella will have to learn to trust Gabe and he’s going to have to give her time. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. I was a little frustrated with Bella’s inability to believe in Gabe, but I understand where she’s coming from. He was very clear about his feelings, and put his heart on the line and she just didn’t believe in him. I hated that for him and it even made me cry! But it all worked out the way it needed to in the end! Looking forward to Taylor and Pierce’s story!

Today, just as I got back to my door, Deacon was exiting his apartment.
“Oh, hey, Carys-Like-Paris. How goes it?” He flashed a wide smile.
When people ask me my name, for some stupid reason, I sometimes answer,
“Carys, like Paris,” particularly when I’m nervous. That was the case the first
time I met Deacon.
A whiff of his amazing smell put my body on alert. He looked handsome as
always. Today he wore a camel-colored suede coat with a shearling collar. His
blue eyes, which stood out against his tanned skin, glimmered under the
fluorescent lights overhead, which also brought out the copper tint to his
otherwise medium-brown hair. He was at least six-foot-two—a beanstalk to my
five-foot-four self.
This was my opportunity to bring up last night. But now that he was right
here, towering over me, his musky smell saturating the air, I seemed to have
lost the words. Still, I was determined to speak up now or never.
My heartbeat accelerated. Here
goes.
Still out of breath from my sprint up the stairs, I said, “Well,
honestly, in answer to your question… I’d love to say I’m doing great, but I
had a hard time getting to sleep last night. So, I’ve been better.”
He frowned. “I’m sorry to hear that.”
“Actually, it’s sort of your fault.”
Deacon’s forehead crinkled. “My fault?”
“Yeah. I don’t know if you realize this, but your bed is right up against
mine, on the opposite side of the wall. Your…interactions…last night woke me up, and I had a hard time getting
back to sleep.”
Boom.
There.
Said it.
Deacon closed his eyes momentarily. “Shit. I’m sorry. I didn’t know you
were right behind me.”
“Yeah. It’s basically like I’m…right there.”
“Well, that was rude of me. I should’ve invited you to join.”
What? It felt
like all my blood rushed to my head.
He held out his palms. “I’m kidding. Bad sense of humor comes out when I
feel awkward, I guess.”
Slipping a piece of my hair behind my ear, I brushed off his comment. “I
know you’re kidding.”
“Totally kidding.” He smiled. “But I’ll try to be more considerate now
that I know you can hear everything. You should’ve said something.”
I tilted my head. “How exactly would that have worked? Barging in on two
naked people? That’s why I’m saying something now.”
“Solid point. But I take it last night wasn’t the first time you
overheard things?”
I looked down at my feet. “No, it wasn’t.”
“You could’ve banged on the wall or something.”
“I’m not one to rudely interrupt someone’s…personal happenings. I just
wanted you to be aware of the situation. We don’t need to discuss it further.”
“Maybe we should come up with a code.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, If I’m disturbing your peace, you play a song and crank it up to
send me a message.” He snapped his fingers. “Something ironic like ‘The Sounds
of Silence’ by Simon and Garfunkel.”
“Can’t exactly crank up a song when a baby is sleeping.”
His smile faded. “See? That goes to show you how clueless I am. Clueless
and so sorry, Carys. Truly. I’ll try not to let it happen again.”
“It better not, fuckboy!” a voice shouted from behind one of the
apartment doors.
Deacon and I turned around in unison. I noticed Mrs. Winsbanger’s door
move across the hall. The old lady must have been listening in. She lived
alone, and I often spotted her peeking out her door, spying on people.
Deacon grimaced. “Mrs. Winsbanger loves me.”
“Apparently I’m not the only one who overheard things last night,” I
said.
His face turned red. His embarrassment was a bit surprising. I’d expected
him to be more cocky.
“I’ll move my bed to the other side of the room. That should help.”
“Well, that would be nice, if it’s not too much trouble.”
“It’s not.”
Happy to have the conversation over with, I let out a long breath. “Okay,
well, I’ll let you get going.”
He didn’t budge and seemed to be examining my face. “You okay?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“You seem frazzled.”
Well, yeah. I didn’t
get good sleep, I’m trying to get things done in possibly the only hour of the
day I have free, and we just had the most awkward conversation EVER.
“This is just me—my life. I have what could be barely more than an hour
to eat my lunch and have some quiet time before my daughter wakes up from her
nap.”
“Ah.” He scratched his chin. “How old is she now?”
“Six months.”
Deacon knew I was a single mom. He’d run into me one day and helped me
bring groceries in while I tried to juggle Sunny and her stroller.
I was just about to head back inside my apartment when his voice stopped
me.
“Do you need anything?”
I wasn’t entirely sure what he meant. “Like what?”
“Something from the store? A…coffee, maybe? I’m just headed out to run a
quick errand, but I can stop somewhere on the way back.”
“It’s the least you can do, monkey balls!” Mrs. Winsbanger chimed in from
across the hall.
She was apparently still listening.
“Did she just fucking call me monkey
balls
?” he whispered.
At that moment, I lost it. Laughter got a hold of me, and it took almost
a minute before I could even speak. Deacon laughed, too, but I think he was
more cracking up at my reaction.
“No idea why she just called you monkey balls. But I haven’t laughed this
hard in weeks.”
After I finally calmed down, Deacon repeated his earlier question.
“Anyway, as I was saying, can I get you a coffee or something?”
His offer gave me pause. It was rare that anyone asked if I needed
anything. I had a couple of good friends in the city, but they worked and had
busy social lives. It wasn’t like they were around in the middle of the day to
run to the store for me. And given that it was fall in New York, it was getting
chilly out. I had to have a damn good reason to take Sunny out in the cold.
Honestly, I was dying for a latte from Starbucks. Running to the coffee
shop was definitely something people without babies took for granted. It wasn’t
worth having to bundle Sunny up.
“I would love a vanilla latte from Starbucks, if you pass one on your way
back,” I finally said.
“Done.” He smiled. “That’s it?”
“Just one pump of vanilla would be great.”
“One pump. Got it. Anything else?”
“Isn’t that enough? It’s hardly a necessity. I shouldn’t be taking
advantage.”
“Take advantage of me. What else do you need? Seriously. It’s the least I
can do after disturbing your peace last night.”
Take advantage of me. Yup. Mind straight in the gutter.
“You’re not my gopher.”
“Carys….” His baritone voice turned serious, and he repeated in a slow
and exaggerated manner, “What. Do. You. Need? I could run to the store.”
There was something else I
desperately needed.
“Diapers?” I said hesitantly.
“Okay.” He laughed. “You’re gonna have to help me out with those. I’ve
never purchased them in my life.”
Before I could tell him what size, he handed me his phone. I was all too
aware of the brief touch of his hand.
“Enter your digits. I’ll text you from the store to make sure I get the
right kind.”
I did as he said before handing him back the phone, once again enjoying
the contact from that brief exchange. Cheap thrills were as good as it got
these days.
He put it in his pocket. “Anything else?”
“Not that I can think of.”
“Alright. Well, if you change your mind, you can let me know when I
text.”
“Thank you. I really appreciate
it.”
“Talk to ya in a bit,” he said before heading down the hall.
I stood by my door and watched him walk away. The view from the back was
just as good as the front. And moreover, it seemed Deacon was just as lovely on
the inside as he was on the outside.
“One pump my ass,” I heard Mrs. Winsbanger say before she slammed her
door.

5 out of 5 stars

Jinx’s Fantasy is a novella in the Goddess Isles series by Pepper Winters. You should read Sully’s Fantasy and Jinx’s Fantasy after the series and not before.
Sullivan and Eleanor love their islands. The beaches. The solitude. Their rescues. After meeting a man named Prest at a Masquerade ball they have decided to purchase a few yachts. For business and for pleasure. Oh, the pleasure these two have especially cinta and pressing play to start their fantasies. They explored his fantasy and now it was time for them to explore hers. On a yacht.
I can’t say much more than that. I will say it’s hot AF. It was awesome to see them again along with the other characters from Goddess Isles and Pepper’s other series’.
Quotes:
He’d taken me with rawness and violence.
He kissed me with worship and reverence.
“Hell yes, I’m ready.”
“Fuck, I’m going to make you scream tonight, Jinx.”
“Promises.” She winked. “Press the damn button, Sully.”
“You’re the only one who sees me at my weakest and thinks I’m strong.”
“And you’re the only one who can make me strong by showing me how weak I am next to you.”

Hide and Seek is the third book in the Brantley Walker: Off the Books series by Nicole Edwards. I am loving this series and all of the characters. I’m totally invested in Brantley and Reese’s lives as well as JJ, Baz and now Trey! The entire series has the perfect mix of lust, romance, humor, suspense and fun. The OTB team is on another assignment while they are trying to expand the team so they can conquer more cases. They are dedicated and smart and determined to solve every case they get. I’m loving their personalities and how they all mesh together while we get storylines from both Reese and Brantley and JJ and Baz. It’s written extremely well so you have the perfect amount of everything you want from the team. I can’t wait to see who joins next and what cases they are going to solve! It was also awesome to see Travis, RT and Z! Overall, I loved it and can’t wait for more!

“This book is everything—heart, humor, and just the right amount of heat. A perfect distraction!” – Adriana Locke, USA Today Bestselling Author

Drive Me Wild, an all-new sexy, opposites-attract romance with all the feels by USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available now!

DriveMeWild AMAZON (1)

When Blair Beaufort literally crashes into Bellamy Creek wearing a ball gown and a tiara, I should have towed her car, said goodnight, and sent her packing.

I’m a mechanic, not a hotel manager. I’ve got enough on my plate trying to keep my shop from going under, my overbearing mother off my back, and my baseball team in contention for the league championship. I don’t have time for a former debutante with zero street smarts and a cash flow problem, even if she is crazy beautiful.

Problem is, she’s stranded in my small town, and I’m hiding a protective streak underneath my grumpy exterior that runs deep. So I offer her a place to stay and keep my hands to myself.

For exactly one night.

If only she weren’t so gorgeous. So funny. So eager to please. She’s a disaster behind the wheel, but she drives me wild without even trying–at work, at home, in the back of my truck . . . I can’t get enough of the way she makes me feel.

But I know better than to think it can last. She wants a fairy tale, and I’m no prince.

So when it comes time for her to leave, there’s nothing I can do but let her go.

No matter how much it hurts to say goodbye.

Sandra's Review

5 out of 5 stars

Drive Me Wild is the the first book in Melanie Harlow’s newest series, Ballemy Creek. Four childhood friends. Four love stories. One small town. First up is a sexy and grumpy mechanic and a princess who followed a sign…

Blair was on her own. She left her old life behind to start the life she wanted, and on her way to one small town she broke down in another. All because she wanted some apple pie plus the fact that she had terrible luck as a driver. It was definitely a rocky start to her new life but it was a start, right? She had lessons to learn and the first was that small towns grew hot men. Second, it was not going to be easy to find parts for ‘71 MG. And thirdly, small town gossip was wild. But, this is what she wanted in a way. To figure it out. She didn’t want a man to rescue her but Griffin was not just any other man and this wasn’t a rescue.

One month. She needed help with her car and he needed help with his business. Then, she would move on with her with her new life as a baker in another small town. Easy, right? It’s not like anything could happen. Griffin didn’t do relationships. He rarely even did one-night stands. If it was up to his mother he would be married with two point five kids by now but he didn’t want that life. He wanted to keep the family business open and to play old man baseball with his buddies. Blair, a woman who came into town looking like a princess, tiara and all was not going to change his mind. He could keep his hands to himself for one month or one night as it turns out. He is so f*cked.

Omg!! I loved this book! It might just be my favorite Melanie book. I love when my favorites start a new series. New characters. New towns. New feel. Griffin is a delicious, sweet on the inside, hard on the outside kind of man. And, damn…does he have a filthy mouth and a body to back it up. Then there is Blair, she is stronger than she thinks. She is sweet, surprising, and a little naughty. Together, their chemistry is fire, their banter is fun, and their connection is felt. I loved it all and can’t wait for the next book!

P.S. I am married to a mechanic and they are totally cute. We have a daughter named Cheyenne so it was crazy that Griffin has a sister with the same name. Lol.

Quotes:

“Oh yeah? Well, Moretti was just telling us last night about a threesome he had recently. Is that the kind of gentleman you think I should be?”

My mother was silent for a moment, and I squeezed my eyes shut, picturing her having a heart attack. And then.

“That is exactly what I’m talking about! He charmed two women into being with him. All I’m asking you to do is work on one.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking for, princess,” his voice gravelly with the struggle for control.

“Then I guess you better show me.”

“You want a fairy tale, and I’m no prince.”

I didn’t think I’d fall in love.
I didn’t think I’d have a relationship with my brother again.
I didn’t think that he’d come back.

Now I’m in Cain.
My crew is in college.
They’re growing, going through their own things.
And here I am, figuring out my life.

There’s always hurdles and obstacles to overcome.
That was never my hardship.
That was my regular.
But living? Being content? Being happy?
Those were my challenges now.

Everything was going well…
Until it wasn’t. Again.

Release Day & Review – Temptation on Ocean Drive, Jennifer Probst

August 25, 2020 By

Release Day & Review – Drive Me Wild, Melanie Harlow

Blog Tour, Reviews & Excerpt – Not My Romeo, Ilsa Madden-Mills

August 20, 2020 By

“Rife with uproarious moments and banter that sings, this scorching contemporary will captivate Madden-Mills’s fans.” —Publishers Weekly

Not My Romeo, the all-new sexy and unforgettable contemporary sports romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills is available now!

Madden-Mills - Not My Romeo - 29324 -CV-FT-V

We start off with a lie on Valentine’s Day.

My blind date isn’t the studious guy I expected: he’s a drop-dead gorgeous player with sinful amber eyes. Somehow we end up at his penthouse. I blame the gin and tonic.

The next day I learn he’s Jack Hawke—bad-boy professional quarterback with a murky past. The NDA he has me sign should be a warning that he isn’t a regular person. Please. I sign it Juliet Capulet, so goodbye, famous football player with abs of steel, and good luck tracking down this small-town librarian.

But Jack keeps showing up in places I least expect him. Just when I’m sure he’s gone, he waltzes into my community theater and wins the part of Romeo to my Juliet. How’s a plain, mostly innocent girl like me supposed to resist a man like him?

Is Jack my real Romeo…or will this gorgeous football player only break my heart?

Kara's Review

5 out of 5 stars

Not My Romeo is the first book in a new series, The Game Changers, by the talented Ilsa Madden-Mills. I’m a huge fan of Ilsa’s and every book I read of hers is my new favorite! Jack and Elena have the greatest meet cute! Blind date, mistaken identity. Jack can’t believe she doesn’t know who he is and he wants to tell her, but it’s so refreshing to be with a woman who likes him for him and not his fame or what he can do for her. Elena doesn’t date. She’s a small town librarian with a secret lingerie collection. But she can’t believe her luck when she sees Jack. He’s the sexiest, hottest man she’s ever seen. And the chemistry is off the charts. One night isn’t enough for Jack and he needs to find her. When they just happen to be at the same place at the same time, more that once, Jack starts to think fate is messing with him. He doesn’t believe in love. He’s seen what it can do to someone. But Elena is under his skin. Her hair, her sassiness, her sexiness. He can’t stay away from her. Elena doesn’t know who this woman she has become is. Standing up for herself. Playing hard to get. Speaking her mind. She likes this new side. And so does Jack. Sexy make-out kisses and stolen moments. Playing Juliet to his Romeo. Is their story destined to end the same way? Oh my Lord! This story. This man. J-a-c-k is my new love. What a complex, funny, serious, shy, fun, smart man! Yes, he’s a talented football player, but he’s so much more than that! He just doesn’t trust enough to show his real self. And his taste in music and tv? And books? SWOON! Elena is hilarious with her southern charm and talent. I want to be her friend. And I can’t forget the secondary characters, Topher, Quinn, and Aiden. And Devon. I can’t even with him! I hope we get to see more from all of them! Overall, I laughed, cried, smiled, laughed some more, swooned and loved every word!

“I’m better than ice cream.”

“Obviously you haven’t had Ben & Jerry’s Rocky Road.”

“Obviously you haven’t had me before.”

“Why do you always look so pretty!”

“Woman, I’m a grown-ass man. I am not pretty.”

“You are, and it’s so annoying.”

“I’m not wild. I’m a librarian.”

“You keep saying that, but you’ve got a streak in you and I like it.”

Sandra's Review

5 out of 5 stars

Not My Romeo is Ilsa Madden-Mills newest fun and sexy standalone. I know when I start one of her books I will not want to put it down and this one is no exception. The synopsis is perfect so I will make this short. Maybe.

It all started with a blind date on Valentine’s Day. One that wasn’t supposed to be between a famous football player and a librarian. Not between the bad boy of football and a lover of books and lingerie. It’s all a big mistake but Jack is enjoying the stranger too much. He loves that she doesn’t know who he is, her wittiness, and her drop-dead curves under her pencil skirt. And Elena enjoys his company and the way he looks at her. It turns into a fantastic and much needed night. Then the next morning, she finds out who she really spent a night with. To say she is shocked is an understatement. The jerk. At least she won’t have to see him again, right?

So wrong!! Elena has never crossed paths with the man and now he is everywhere. He wants more nights with her. He was lucky he even got the one since she’s not a one-night stand kinda girl. She is a relationship kind of lady. Only if her body would listen to her when he is around her. The traitor. It wants to climb him like a tree. Over and over again. Her mind tells her to run. She doesn’t want to get hurt. He is definitely not no Romeo…until he is in the town play. She is so screwed. And so is he.

Awe!! I loved these two. From beginning to end. She is a badass sweetheart and he is an alpha with a side of teenage fun in him. Lol! You have to read it to figure that out. I just loved them together. Feisty, sweet, funny, and emotional. They are amazing together but it that enough? They have trust issues, baggage, and it’s not easy.

Overall…It’s everything I expected and more! I laughed so hard. Got hot and bothered. Cried. Laughed some more. And swooned. Oh, I can’t forget the secondary characters. LOVE THEM!! I want their stories.

P.S. I know, I know…it’s not short.

Quotes:

“Who is that?”

“J-a-c-k.”

Aunt Clara giggles. “And now she’s spelling words. Somebody get the smelling salts.”

What? No. I shake my head.

“And now you’re frowning.”

I huff. “Why do you always look so pretty!”

“Woman, I am a grown-ass man. I am not pretty.”

“You are, and it’s so annoying.”

“Oh my God, if you drop me and this pie, I will never ever forgive you.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll save the pie.”

“You will not get one piece!” She blows at a piece of wet hair in her face.

Excerpt

I pull my white cat-eye glasses out of my purse and slide them on for a better look. My heart flip-flops as butterflies take flight in my stomach. Oh heck no. That can’t be him. He’s . . . he’s . . . freaking gorgeous, and I don’t mean regular handsome but like a movie star: dark hair swept off his face, the strands wavy and unruly with copper highlights, soft and silky brushing against his cheeks, and too long for a newscaster, in my opinion—but what do I know? I don’t own a television.

He lifts his arm to shove his hair back, and my eyes pop at the tightly roped muscles of his forearm and biceps straining through the fabric, the impossibly broad shoulders.

Well, would you look at that.

And this has to be him, right?

I’m in the right restaurant. He’s alone. He’s wearing a blue shirt. He has dark hair. Odds point to yes. Usually the most simple explanation is exactly what it appears. Therefore, he must be my date.

The man in question turns to look out the window, tapping his fingers on the table impatiently, and I take in his profile. Long straight nose, full dark arching eyebrows, and a sharp, bladed jawline. Sensuous lips, the lower one decadently full. Almost wicked. He’s the kind of hot that draws your eyes over and over just to make sure it’s not a mirage. I knew guys like him at NYU—sexy, athletic gym types who played a sport. And those types never gave me a second look. I’d watch them work out while I fumbled my way around one of those god-awful butterfly machines, while beautiful, tall, svelte girls who weren’t sweating fawned over them, bringing them towels, water bottles, and sexy promises.

He takes a sip of an amber liquid, long tanned fingers grasping the fragile container as his eyes rove across the room. They prowl around the restaurant, as if he’s assessing every person in sight, and I feel the sizzle of him even from twenty feet away. Prickles of awareness skate down my spine. I’m the alpha, his body language yells. Come and challenge me.

His gaze drifts right over me without stopping.

Not surprised.

I duck back into the shadows.

Dang it. My hands clench. I wanted nice and nerdy, not this . . . sexy beast!

And judging by the scowl on his face, he’s grumpy. Life’s too short to be dour, Mister. And what is he annoyed about? I am here!

And he did see a picture of me. Topher said so.

Yeah, maybe he doesn’t really want to meet you.

Maybe he’s hoping you won’t show up.

I tap my foot. I should leave. Really.

The smells of Milano’s waft around me, spicy and tantalizing, and my stomach lets out an angry howl. I move from one foot to the next. Every place to eat between here and Daisy is going to be packed. I could always hit a drive-through on the way back home—but how pathetic is a Big Mac and fries on Valentine’s Day? Plus, I’ll have my entire nosy family to answer to tomorrow. They’ve built up this blind date so much: Oooooh, Elena has a date with a weatherman. Ask him if that’s a barometer in his pocket or if he’s just glad to see you.

I give myself a mental pep talk.

Grow some balls, Elena.

Sometimes you have to go out and take what you want.

So what if he’s hot enough to suck the dew off a rose.

You are hungry. Do it for the pasta.

He is your date. Go get ’em, girl.

I gather my resolve, point my little black pumps in his direction, and start marching.
