Summary

Gorgeous women don’t just stumble onto Ronan Cross’s remote property. But this one—vulnerable, victimized, and needing the kind of help only Ronan can offer—tells a story that makes his blood boil almost as hot as his need to protect her.

Since her father’s death, Chloe Harris has become a prisoner. Her own brother, a flesh peddler and low-level player in the Denver Mafia, is forcing her to sell her body for an endgame Chloe never saw coming: control over a vast fortune. Her only way out is to run—straight into the arms of the one hard-bodied man she can trust.

Defending Chloe could rain punishment down on the Mountain Mercenaries. Her brother has Mob connections and the local police in his pocket. But Ronan still has an edge—the unshakable loyalty of his deadly teammates. As well as an unquenchable thirst for retribution…and Chloe.

Chloe clenched her teeth but kept her head down. She knew in a minute or two, Leon would have to slow down to take a turn, and that was going to be her best chance. She purposely hadn’t put on her seat belt when they’d left BJ’s for this reason. She was desperate enough to throw herself out of a moving vehicle to get away from her evil brother once and for all.

It was going to suck. It was possible she’d break a bone . . . or two. But as long as she protected her legs so she could run, she’d endure any amount of pain to get away.

Leon suddenly exclaimed, “What?”

Chloe felt him stomp on the gas suddenly, pinning her body momentarily against the seat. She’d already been tense as she’d prepared to throw open the car door and tuck and roll, but Leon speeding up definitely hindered her plans. There was no way she’d be able to survive jumping from the car while it was moving as fast as it was.

But she didn’t have time to turn to discover what Leon had seen, or what he was trying to outrun before something hit the back end of the Mercedes. Chloe’s body was thrown forward, then violently to the side as the car spun. Her head smacked against the passenger window, hard enough for her to see stars.

The car continued to spin in a circle, and Chloe heard Abbie screaming, then the sound of metal crunching and glass breaking. The car came to a stop, and everything was silent for a moment. The hiss of steam rising from the front end of the Mercedes, where it had hit a tree alongside the road, was the only sound.

Before Chloe could see what was wrong, or throw herself out of the car and run, the door next to her opened, and a hand reached into the car and latched onto her arm. She was being forced up and out of the car before she could get her thoughts in order. She got a glimpse of a very tall man wearing a mask before he swung her up and over his shoulder and headed for a huge Hummer behind her brother’s wrecked car.

Chloe felt a strong arm band around her thighs, holding her in place securely. Her head was hanging down over the man’s back, and she tried to shake it to clear her senses, but all that did was make her head throb.

“What are you—”

Leon’s voice was suddenly cut off, and Chloe propped herself. She saw another man in a black mask standing next to the driver’s door of the Mercedes

Fear spiked through Chloe. What was the saying? Out of the frying pan, into the fire? She didn’t want to be with her brother anymore, but she didn’t know the men who had run into their car. What if these men were working for Carlino or Smaldone? Maybe they’d found out about her siphoning Leon’s money into a separate account, and they were here to make her pay?

Panic made her squirm in desperation. Why couldn’t everyone just leave her alone? What had she done to deserve this life?

“Calm down,” the man holding her said, even as his arm tightened even more around her thighs.

But Chloe couldn’t calm down. She knew if these three men got her into the Hummer, things could go from bad to worse. Pushing herself up, she arched her back and tried to throw herself off the man’s shoulder.

He swore and stopped by the back door of the large all-terrain vehicle.

When Chloe’s squirming didn’t make the man lose his grip, she twisted and wrenched the mask off his head, seeing only that he had blond hair. At her actions, he abruptly dropped his shoulder and put her on her feet, spinning her around to face the Hummer.

Chloe didn’t have any weapons, so she used what she did have. Namely, her teeth. She turned her head and bit his arm, making sure to grind down to do as much damage as she could.

My Heroine Chloe by Susan Stoker

In Defending Chloe, book 2 in the Mountain Mercenaries series, Ronan “Ro” Black comes face-to-face with the very thing he’s devoted his life to stopping…an abused woman literally walks up to his house needing to use a phone. That starts him on the path to his future happily ever after. But of course things are never as easy as they seem.

Chloe has spent the last few years a virtual prisoner in her brother’s house. The last straw is when he decides to whore her out at his strip club.

In the excerpt below she’s completed her first night of “training” and has decided there’s no way she’s going to go along with her brother’s plans for her. She’d hoped, even after all she’d been through, that the brother she once knew and loved would come to his senses.

She might be down, but Chloe is not down. She’ll fight her brother’s plans for her with everything she has. She go down kicking and screaming if she has to…and as you can see in the below excerpt, she does just that…of course she has no idea it’s the good guys who are kidnapping her.
