BLURB

When life took an unexpected turn, I decided to get out of New York for a while. What better place to go than the idyllic small town my father spoke about so fondly when I was growing up? Laurel Lake held the title America’s Friendliest Town for seventeen years running, and friendly was just what I needed right now.

Unfortunately, friendly wasn’t the welcome I got when I arrived.
Instead, I got Fox Cassidy. My tall, dark, and burly neighbor, who grunted at me instead of saying hello.
Okay, so I might’ve had his mailbox in my hands the first time we met. And it might’ve been a little crushed after removing it from under my tire. And I might’ve needed his help breaking into the place I was staying in after the key broke off in the lock. But still…he didn’t have to be so grumpy.
As time went on though, I started to notice things about Fox other than his glares. Like how he watched me when he thought I wasn’t looking, or how fire ignited in his eyes whenever we bickered. Though I was in Laurel Lake to escape my problems, not create new ones. And getting involved with a man like Fox screamed trouble, even if he was gorgeous and unlike any man I’d ever met.
But alas, problem seemed to be my middle name this year. So why not have some fun while I was here for the summer? It seemed like a good plan. At least until it was time to go home…
They say what happens at the lake, stays at the lake. But it’s not so easy to walk away when what stays behind…is your heart.

What Happens at the Lake is Vi Keeland’s newest standalone. If you follow my reviews then you know I don’t read blurbs until I need to write the review so I don’t spoil anything so all I knew was that there was a lake involved. Lol. It’s a beautiful setting, really. I fell for Laurel Lake and the people living there.

Josie grew up in Manhattan but her father was raised in America’s Friendliest Town, Laurel Lake. She always wanted to visit the town her father was so fond of but her mother never wanted to go back. Now, was her chance after a tenant moved out of her father’s home, the one she inherited when she was only thirteen. She had three months to give the home a little TLC and get to know the town her father loved. When she got there, the unexpected happened… She met the grumpiest yet hottest man she has ever laid eyes on. Her neighbor. A man who spoke in grunts.

Fox didn’t need this woman living next door, even temporarily. She was a hot mess emphasis on hot. He knew she was trouble. Not just because he knew he would end up helping her with the house but because this town was about to make the phone lines spark with gossip. Small-town living, right? He loved and hated it at the same time. He knew he was an asshole but it is what it is. He didn’t like change…

And everything was about to change.

Damn…I love a grump, especially one with a good heart deep down. I also love a woman who doesn’t give up when trying to find that good heart. Vi absolutely killed it with these characters and their story. It’s fun. It’s sexy. It’s emotional. Oh, did I mention that Fox is an ex-pro hockey player? Extra yum!

P.S. I love Daisy Duck 🦆

5 out of 5 stars

What Happens at the Lake is Vi Keeland’s newest romance and I loved everything about it. Grumpy hero, smart, capable heroine who are next door neighbors! Josie is looking for a place to heal so she goes to her dad’s hometown. She never thought she’d fall so fast for the town and its people. On her very first day, she hits her neighbors mailbox and he’s less than thrilled. But even though he’s the grumpiest grump alive, he keeps showing up to help her. Just little things and then more and more. Fox does not have time for his sexy new neighbor. But he can’t keep his eyes or his thoughts off her. He eventually gives in and helps her fix up her house. The more he gets to know her, the more he wants to know. And for the first time in a very long time, it’s more than just sexual attraction. He likes her. She makes him smile, and he never smiles. Everyone notices, especially Josie. He just can’t stop himself so he asks her out. Knowing the gossip mill is going to explode. He doesn’t care. He wants her and that’s it. When his past threatens to upend the new life he wants he needs to make a big decision. Let Josie go or chase after her. Oh my word! I loved this story. I laughed out loud so many times I lost count. I smiled, snickered and had to fan myself. I love Laurel Lake! Josie founds more than Fox there, she found her old self. She found a new family. Josie brought Fox back to life and reminded him what’s it feels like to be happy. Overall, I loved it. Every page, every character, everything. I even loved Daisy the duck! Ha!
