Life made him dangerous. Love made him lethal.
Killian Marks is a third-generation hitman. After hunting monsters for over twenty years, he lives under no illusions of happily ever afters and fairy tales. Until he meets a man who threatens to disarm him, by giving him hope for a future and showing him there’s more to life than just death.
For Nick, living in shadows is second nature. He’s all too familiar with the dark side of humanity and knows how delicate life can be. Each new day is a gift, even though it means doing it alone. But he’ll risk his survival for the one man who awakens something deep within and leaves him yearning for more.
Nick wants to solve the mystery behind the dark, brooding man, while Killian craves the life and light emanating from Nick. They soon discover they have more in common than either could have anticipated. With both their lives and hearts at stake, they must confront the ghost from Nick’s past intent on tying up a loose end. Only then will they truly find peace, and discover the shades of life in between.

Shades is a  new standalone story by the fabulous Jaime Reese. I’m a huge fan if Jaime’s and I absolutely loved her Men of Halfway House series. Shades is a standalone mm romance and once I started it I didn’t want to put it down. Jaime always delivers the good with her strong characters who have pasts, but somehow are optimistic about love. When they find the right man! Killian is hitman. It’s in his blood. But he’s not a soulless killer. He’s been doing this a long time. Living his life as a hitman, but he has standards. There are things he just won’t do. He has resigned himself to being alone without someone to share his life with. Until he meets Nick. His sexy waiter who brings him back to the same restaurant over and over. Nick sees what everyone else sees when they look at Killian. A man who intimidates people just by breathing. He’s tall, dark and dangerously handsome but Nick isn’t afraid of him. When their paths cross again one fateful night, they find out they only have each other to depend on. Someone’s coming and they have to trust each other to make it out the other side. Together. Can Killian keep his promise to protect Nick? Now that he has him, he’s not going to lose him. Will Nick use his instincts to fight for what he wants? I loved this story! It has everything I love in a book, sexy characters, humor, suspense, angst, lust and love. I instantly fell for Killian. He’s broody and stoic. But there’s a softie who lives inside him. Nick is guarded but is trying to live life to its fullest. He smiles and talks more than Killian, but he’s deep and smart also. They are yin and yang. Dark and Light. Overall, I laughed, teared up, had to fan myself and loved every word!

“I’m not going anywhere without you.”

“That’s my favorite fucking word in the entire English language.”

“I would have figured ‘fuck’ was your favorite.”

“Only if you’re involved.”

“Hitmen need love too.”

“Stop calling me that.”

Sandra's Review

5 out of 5 stars

Shades is a standalone novel. I love Jaime’s Men of Halfway House series so I will always look forward to her new books. She mentioned Shades is darker than her other books, and that got me excited. I love books with Hearts and flowers but I also crave books with a darker side. A dangerous and twisted side. This one is dangerous and I loved every minute of it.
Killian was born into this life. A life of a hitman. Along the way he changes the rules. He only killed villains. That doesn’t mean he thinks he is a good guy. He is dark. Lonely. Untrusting. He doesn’t see in color. His life is in black and white until he sees him. A man moving in and out of tables in a restaurant with ease through the tension. He makes him see one color at a time. He didn’t do routine but he couldn’t stop going to that restaurant to see him. A man who wasn’t scared of him. A man who even made him smile. But, he also knew he was a man who deserves more than what he could give him. Nick was a man who could change everything.
Nick was intrigued by Ian. Everyone else feared him. He didn’t. His had his secrets. His own darkness under his light. Maybe that was why he didn’t fear Ian but wanted more from him. Even though he knew they couldn’t have anything more than stolen glances and small talk within the restaurant. He wished his life was different. That he could have a regular life. But that changed two years ago. Now his life was about living day by day. No future in sight. But, it seems someone else has other plans.
I can’t really get into much more of the story without spoiling anything. I will say that once I opened the book, I did not want to put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next. Had to know if Killian and Nick would find what they weren’t even looking for.
Overall…It’s full of suspense, secrets, fate, love, laughter, and sexiness.
“Hitmen need love too.”
“I like him,” Dex said.
“Me too.”
“He makes you smile. I want to keep him.”
“He’s not a puppy.”
“Shut up.” Dex leaned over and bumped his shoulder. “You know you want to keep him too.”
“Have I made the strong and scary Killian Marks blush?”
Jaime Reese is the alter ego of an artist who loves the creative process of writing, just not about herself. Fiction is far more interesting. She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.
