BEYOND THE ROSES
To the outside world, my life is perfect.
I’m young and rich, and some may even say I’m beautiful. But I would give anything to be somebody else because after being extraordinary all my life, all I wish for is…silence.
My name is Lola Van Allen, and there’s no easy way to say it, but…I’m dying.
When my doctors reveal all hope is lost, I decide to spend the time I have left sharing my experience at Strawberry Fields, a summer camp for terminally ill children. No matter my fate, I yearn to make a difference.
Things are quiet and slow-moving until I meet him.
Dr. Roman Archibald.
From the moment our lives entwine, he pushes me until breaking point. But for someone who has nothing left to lose, I push back twice as hard. Roman challenges me in ways I never imagined, revealing things aren’t always what they seem.
This is my story…and how I got a second chance at life.

I. Am. Broken. I have read most of Monica’s books and I am in awe of this story. If I could give a million stars, I would. It’s not only one of my top reads of 2020 but ever. It’s a book I will never forget, and will stay in my heart forever. I had no idea what I was going into but I was warned that there were going to be tears. And was there ever! Just take them, Monica. All of them. Every last drop.
Lola was young, beautiful, and rich. She lived her life and accepted that any day could be her last. In her last hours, days, weeks, or months she wanted to help. To help children who were sick and wanted to live a normal summer at Strawberry Fields. A place filled with love, smiles, sports, activities, and him. Dr. Roman Archibald. A man who didn’t want her to give up. A man who challenged her. A man who made her feel special. Loved. A man who changed her life. And she was a woman who changed his. Their story is…I have no words. Seriously, I am starting to cry again. It’s breathtaking.
I can’t really say much without spoiling it. The writing is poetic, beautiful, and addicting. If it wasn’t for the last few crazy days I would have read it in one sitting. It’s an emotional ride with some laughs and swoons mixed it. Thank you again, Monica for all of your words and giving us Roman and Lola.
“Never underestimate your impact on the world. You just may be someone’s reason for living.”
“I’m gardening,” he reveals, which doesn’t explain why he’s out at this ungodly hour.
“And this gardening couldn’t wait until the morning? When it’s daylight and a lot less…serial killerish?” I ask, searching for the right word.
He searches my face, scanning every inch to ensure I didn’t break. He’s become my anchor, my tether to this place, and I instantly take in air again.
