5 Stars

Betrayed by Lies is the third book in the Bound and Broken series. Rebecca is one of my go to authors. I read everything she writes. Her writing is always fantastic, emotional and often heartbreaking. It also helps that she’s an incredible human being. I’ve read all of Rebecca’s books and Sam is one of my favorite characters. I know everyone loves Alex, and I do too, but there was just something about Sam that has called to me since the beginning of this series. I actually rooted for Emilia to pick him at one point :). But, I’m glad Rebecca knew what she was doing. Sam finally gets his story. He needs a fresh start and he gets a job in LA. He’s still recovering emotionally, but he’s ready to move on in all aspects of his life. When he gets a call from his boss’s sister about a house for rent, he’s ready to get out of his hotel and this seems perfect. He wasn’t prepared for the connection he felt for Kate when he first laid eyes on her. It was a shock, but a welcome one. He wanted Kate and he wasn’t going to apologize for it. Kate is an attorney and she’s a control freak. But something about the sexy Sam Cortez does something to Kate and her resolve. She’s dealing with her own things and trying to just work and live her life. One night with Sam and whiskey changes everything. She wants more. And she wants it with Sam. Is it too soon for Sam and Kate? What happens when you know it’s right? I loved this story! Sam is everything I wanted him to be and so much more! Kate is smart, beautiful and sassy. She’s the perfect match for him. I loved seeing Alex and Emilia again! I know I always say this at the end of one of Rebecca’s books, but I want more!!

I run my fingers through her hair and, for a brief moment, I realize that this is what peace feels like. It’s calm and happiness. It’s comfortable and understated.

She’s my future. She’s my motivation to move forward and leave the past behind me. She is what I’ve been missing.

EXCERPT:

SAM

She shakes her head and laughs. “I don’t judge. It sounds to me like your therapy has helped you see what it is you need versus what you thought you wanted, and I’m so happy you’ve recovered from your injury and you’re able to return to work. So many agents aren’t as lucky as you.” There’s a spark of sadness in her eyes. A look that only the friends and family of those in law enforcement get when they think of those who aren’t as fortunate as I am.

I nod in agreement. “Which is why I was excited to take this opportunity here in L.A. with your brother. He’s giving me another chance to prove myself. California is a fresh start for me.” I smile at her and she smiles in return, and it’s soft, caring, and does things to me that I’m not sure I’m ready for.

“So what do you do?” I ask, turning the questions on her. I’m done spilling my garbage. I want to hear about her.

She drops her eyes from mine and takes another drink of wine before resting it on her thigh. “I’m an attorney. I do corporate law, mostly negotiating and reviewing contracts. It’s extremely boring to someone who’s not interested in legalese, but it keeps me busy and it pays well.” She shrugs.

“Do you ever end up in court?”

“No. Ironically, if there is ever litigation, we typically hire outside counsel. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?” She scrunches her nose up and smiles.

“Not really.” I shake my head. “I get why. You’re an expert at what you do. The attorneys you hire are experts in litigation. Everyone does what they do best.”

“Exactly.”

Our conversation slows, but it’s not uncomfortable in the silence. We both relax in the quiet and jut ‘be’. There’s something to be said for that level of comfort when you’re in the presence of someone else.

“So, when do you think you’ll be moving in?” she asks.

“I’m having some stuff delivered this weekend, so I hope Saturday is okay?” I raise my eyebrow at her, hoping it’s not an inconvenience.

She smiles. “Saturday is perfect.”

“I’m still waiting on a truck from Phoenix, so that’ll be sometime next week, but I’m ready to get out of that hotel. Speaking of that hotel, I really should get going. It’s getting late, and I didn’t mean to keep you up.” I stand up and she follows suit. We both carry our empty glass and beer bottle to the kitchen, and Kate swipes something off the center island.

“This is the key for the house.” She dangles the ring on her pointer finger. “You can have your alarm system installed anytime. If you need anything secured before then, I have a safe and an alarm on this house. You’re welcome to keep anything in here.”

“I appreciate that.” The soft tips of her fingers brush against my palm as she places the key in my hand.

“See you Saturday,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper.

“See you Saturday,” I return. For the first time in a long time, I have something to look forward to.

Review Blitz & Excerpt – Mixed Up, Emma Hart

April 21, 2017 By

MIXEDUP-availnow2

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00022]Hiring my brother’s best friend was not on my to-do list.

Neither was he.

Expanding my dirty cocktail bar into food was supposed to be easy, except finding a chef in my little town of Whiskey Key is anything but.

Until Parker Hamilton comes home—bringing his Michelin starred chef’s hat with him.

He has no work. I need someone like him in my new kitchen.

There’s just one problem: I hate his cocky, filthy-mouthed, sexy-as-hell guts.

Even if I might want him. Just a little…

Working for my best friend’s sister? Not on my to-do list.

She’s another story.

Whiskey Key was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, except I haven’t reached the heights I have by lying in a hammock drinking cocktails. So when Raven Archer is desperate for a chef, I offer up my skills.

I’m bored. She needs what I can give her.

Except there’s a problem: I’ve always hated her.

Her and her big, blue eyes, sassy mouth, and killer curves.

If only I didn’t want her.

 Sandra's Review

5 Stars

Mixed Up is a enemies to lovers standalone romance. I can always count on Emma to make me laugh with sassy and sarcasm. Raven and Parker definitely have plenty of both. And the hate banter between them is epic. Epically hot…
Raven needs a chef since she added a restaurant to her bar. And since her asshole brother Ryan won’t work for his little sister and nobody in their town seems to fit the bill, she has only one choice. To ask Ryan’s best friend and her worst enemy Parker to take over the kitchen. Before she could even ask, he offered. It was only going to be a summer gig anyway since was only on a vacation between chef jobs. They can go three months in the same building without killing each other, right? Sure, why not? What could possible go wrong?
Everything. That’s what. Parker and Raven knew it was a bad idea. They hadn’t seen each other in three years and in those years they somehow got more stubborn. More hateful. More attractive. They both hid what was behind their heated words but when the filthy ones came out, it had to stop. This was his best friend’s sister. She was not to be touched but ignored. But how could he ignore her. She is smart, driven, sassy, sexy, and even a bit classy. He didn’t want to want her but he did. He didn’t know if it was because he wanted a hot hate-fuck or if he had real feelings for this crazy Greek hotshot. And she wasn’t sure if she liked him because he can give her orgasms or if she actually cared about the cocky chef that could make a mean gyro. Even if they figure it out, will they tell Ryan? Is it worth the risk of a lifetime friendship?
Fuck…these two are something else! If I didn’t have a family emergency come up I would had finished this book in one sitting. Instead it took four days but it was exactly what I needed. A humorous fix. I loved Parker. He is a sinfully Sexy chef with a filthy mouth. And I have a total girl crush on Raven. Damn…she is a badass with some sass. She has a sharp tongue and isn’t afraid to use it. She doesn’t give a shit what people think of her attitude because it’s hers. She had zero fucks to give when it came down to it. But, she also has other sides to her that only a lucky few saw. Together, they are fucking hilarious. Sexy. Crazy. And a bit scary. I wouldn’t want to mess with him in the kitchen and I wouldn’t want to mess with her with a bottle in her hand. But, for reals…it’s awesome!
Overall…I loved every minute of it. Its not a flowers and hearts romance. Which I also love but I also need this kind of romance. One filled with hate/lust banter that makes me laugh and feel the heat. And throw in a Greek family reunion and it’s a party.
Quotes:
“I’ll do my best. Although, disclaimer—if you find his body and I’m missing, I’m in Cuba, and I didn’t do it.”
“He’s my kitchen bitch,” I told Brett before he could speak.
“Will you please help me build the pool table?”
“Can I bend you over it after?”
“Only if you want to be punched in the face.”
4.5 Stars

I’m a huge fan of Emma Hart. I’ve read over twenty of her books and I know she’s always going to deliver the goods. I’m going to laugh, swoon, get hot and bothered and laugh more. Her heroes are always uniquely sexy, smart and funny and her heroines are always sexy, sassy and fun. Mixed Up is an epic enemies to lovers story. Raven owns a bar, Dirty, and she’s a fantastic mixologist. All she needs now is food to go with her drinks. She needs a chef and the only available person is Parker, her brother’s best friend and her mortal enemy. But she’s desperate and he’s a famous chef. She’s not prepared for him to be so damn delicious. And sexy. And hot. Let the bickering begin. It’s a battle of wills and death threats. Can they work side by side without killing each other? Parker and Raven are so hilarious! Her quips and comebacks were hysterical. Parker is sweet and sexy and gives as good as he gets. I loved that he admitted his feelings to his mom, even if he didn’t mean to! He’s open and honest and I loved that! Parker’s dirty mouth got me every time!

“What are you calling it?

“The Libido Licker.”

“Is that a promise?”

“Drink enough and it should be.”

“Are you saying I’m a bad singer?

“Actually I’m trying not to say that?”

“I’m lucky I’m pretty.”

“Is that all I am to you? A cook and a cock?”

MIXEDUP-sq9 MUp1

I knew I was making a mistake. After what Raven said last night at dinner, I had the strongest urge to find out what her cocktail menu was. With names like Dirty Screw and The Slutwhisperer, what other gems did she have hidden on there?
Shit, what gems were hidden inside her apparently filthy mind?
I had no place to be thinking that. She was Ryan’s sister and the bane of my goddamn existence. I didn’t give a shit what was inside her head or how she came up with a filthy cocktail menu.
I was going to believe that she’d spent stupid amounts of time on the Internet coming up with those kinds of names. Seeing her in that damn short dress yesterday had already affected me enough—not to mention the fact that she’d changed since I last saw her.
I didn’t know people could change so much in only three years, but Raven Archer had. She was no longer post-grad, trying to seriously figure out what she wanted to do with her life, uncertain and serving burgers to people to make money.
She was grown-up, in more ways than just her age. She was even hotter-headed that she was back then. She seemed stronger and more stubborn, and her tongue was so sharp I probably have scars from how quickly she cut me with her words.
She was taller and fucking curvier, too.
Her lips were fuller. Her eyes were brighter. And the general air that hung about her, that hint of sass and sexiness, the very same thing that made me insult her whenever I opened my mouth almost made me want her, too.
And that was exactly why I couldn’t sit and think about what went on in her mind—filthy or otherwise.
No matter what she looked like or how fucking hot she was, she was my best friend’s sister. Nobody was more off-limits than she was. That wasn’t a new development. It had always been that way.
Thank fucking god I was only here for the summer, and only because my mother had guilted me into it.
As soon as the summer was over, I’d go for my next challenge.
I could get through a few weeks of being in the same town or two as Raven—because after today, avoidance was at the top of my life.
Otherwise, I’d go fucking insane.
Dirty was right on the seafront, only meters away from a small, sandy bay. It’d only taken me a few minutes to walk here from where I’d parked downtown, and despite the music coming from inside the bar, I could still hear the gentle crashing of the waves as they crawled up the sand. The water was right out, and I stared out at the water as I headed up the hill to the bar.
Fairy lights twinkled along the underside of the roof that jutted out over the sidewalk. It was like a goddamn princess castle from the outside, but the beachy vibe was evident. Different sized and colored shells covered the pillars that held up the balcony that jutted out over the front doors.
I pushed open the door. Cold air blasted into me, and so did the heavy bass beat of the music that blared out from the speakers just above my head. There were more fairy lights inside, but they were strung all beneath the bar, across the beams on the ceiling, and over the back wall where the spirits were on the wall. There wasn’t much else in the way of lighting, but what there was was effective enough in holding the entire space into a balance between bright and dusky.
The inside of Raven’s bar was like being outside at the moment the sun set.
I cast my gaze over the rest of the bar. The solid, wood tables and stools that lines the walls and filled the space to my left all had tiny vases of fresh flowers in. Even those were surrounded by fairy lights.
Fucking hell, did she let a class of little girls in here to decorate?
No matter what I felt about the fairy lights, it looked good. Damn good.
I stepped up to the bar and leaned forward on it. Raven was at the other end of the bar, wearing jeans and a tight tank top that tucked beneath the waistband. Strappy, silver heels on her feet glinted off the under-bar lighting, and it was all too easy for me to drop my eyes there then slowly drag my gaze up the length of her entire body.
Light bounced off the chrome cocktail shaker in her hand as she shook it. She popped off the top with one slick of her thumb, and without spilling a drop, poured the pink-red liquid into two martini-style glasses. With her other hand, she reached back to the register and jabbed at it.
Seconds later, she was handing them back their change. It all happened in a flash.
How did such she go from lost to…this…so quick?
“Raven!” A dark-haired woman sitting a few stools away from me with her friend yelled. “There’s a hot guy staring at you!”
I laughed loudly as Raven jerked around. Her gaze landed on me with what felt like a snap, and I swore she mouthed, “Motherfucker,” before she stalked to this end of the bar.
Her hands slapped on the bar in front of me. “What are you doing here?”
“I told you I was coming to check out your menu.”
“He was checking out more than the menu,” the woman’s friend giggled.
Raven held her finger up to them, and with her other hand, slapped a smooth, laminated menu in front of me. “Did you drive?”
“No, I walked all the way from Key West.” I picked up the menu. “Of course I drove.”
“Pick one,” she said, moving away. “I’m not serving you anymore than that. Make it a good choice. What can I get for you?” she asked someone else, cutting me off before I could say a word.
I raised my eyebrows.
“She runs a tight ship,” the first woman said. “Three days ago, there was a guy in here spiking drinks. She caught him and bashed him in the balls with her cocktail shaker so he couldn’t run from the security guard.”
Could my eyebrows go up any higher? “That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. I’ve seen her do worse.”
The second woman’s eyes narrowed. “You have? You know her?”
The first woman rolled her eyes. “Of course he does, Cam. When have you seen her react to a customer like that? He obviously pissed her off in a past life or something.”
“I should be so lucky.” I smirked. “More like all in this life.”
“Her brother’s friend, right?” She tilted her head to the side. “Yeah, she mentioned she hated you.”
She’d talked about me?
“She didn’t say you were hot, though,” the second woman said.
“Camille!”
Ahhh.
The best friends.
“What?” Camille said. “I’m just saying.”
“No more Slutwhisperers for you,” the other woman—the one I presumed to be Lani—said, reaching for her glass.
Camille leaned over and slurped the last of the drink through the straw.
That explained the name of the cocktail.
“What are you doing?” Raven asked, stopping in front of them. “Cam? Your glass is empty. Let me refill that for you.” She winked to the other girl as she turned around.
What was she doing?
She put her back to her friends and grabbed the tequila bottle. She tipped it over a cocktail shaker without actually pouring anything into it. My lips quirked up as she put together what was some pink juice or something and blended it with raspberries.
She poured the mixture into a glass with some vigor in front of Camille.
She’d made her a placebo.
“Made your choice?” Raven turned to me, holding onto the shaker.
“No.” I spun the menu to face her. “What do you think I should have?”
Completely straight-faced, she said, “The Blue Balls.”

house mate_amazonWhat’s sexier than a bad boy? A bad ass man who’s got his shit together.

Max Alexander is nearing thirty-five. He’s built a successful company, and he’s conquered the professional world, but he’s never been lucky in love. Focusing so much time on his business and raising his daughter, adulting has come at the expense of his personal life.

His social skills are shit, his patience is shot, and at times, his temper runs hot.

The last thing he has time for is the recently single, too gorgeous for her own good young woman he hires to take care of his little girl. She’s a distraction he doesn’t need, and besides, there’s no way she’d be interested. But you know what they say about assumptions?

This is book 3 in the Roommates series, but each book can be read as a complete standalone as they all feature new couples to fall in love with.

Sandra's Review

5 Stars

The House Mate is the third book in the Roommates series by the very talented Kendall Ryan. Each book in the series can be read as standalone. If you love single dads stories like I do, you most definitely need this book in your life.
Max thought he had the kind of life he always wanted. He doesn’t have to answer to anyone except to himself. He can come and go as he pleases. He enjoyed his bachelor life. Then in one night it all changed. He was suddenly a single father to a one year old Dylan. He had no idea what he was going to do but he knew he needed help. That is where Addison comes into their lives. She needed a fresh start and loved kids. Hen she saw a position for a live-in nanny job, she had a feeling it was a sign. And after meeting Dylan, she knew this was where she belonged. They bonded instantly. But what was she going to do about the way she felt when she met Mr. Sex on Legs? She didn’t want to ruin this opportunity because of her libido.
Max knew he was in trouble the minute he opened the door. He thought about closing that door but when he saw the connection between his daughter and the beautiful woman who could be exactly what he needed, he couldn’t let her walk away. He surely can keep his dick in his pants so that he daughter could have what she needed. Her. Someone to take care of her. Keep her safe. Make her happy. Keep her healthy. But the more time he spends with her, it’s harder and harder to stay away. He feels something for her. He also feels the love between the girls. And it feels amazing. What if something did happen? Addison wants it too but is it worth the risk of not only losing Max but also Dylan?
I loved. Loved. Loved this story! Single dad stories just get to me especially when you feel the love and bond they have with their children. It’s beautiful. And with a daughter. *swoon* Max is such an amazing father. And Addison is so sweet with Dylan. I loved it even more since Dylan wasn’t just in the background. She was front and center. The most important character. As for Max and Addison…they are fun, flirty, sweet and hot.
Overall…my favorite from the series! I felt connected to the characters. I read the book in one sitting. I was finished by lunch. If I wasn’t then I probably wouldn’t have eaten. Anyway…it made me laugh, swoon, and hot and bothered. I even cried!
Quotes:
Jesus, what kind of nanny pictured her boss naked?
A horny one, my inner devil shot back.
“Do she and Dylan play in the sprinklers a lot?” Zach asked, his face the picture of innocence. Dylan turned, gurgling at the sound of her name. “And if so, what times of day? Asking for a friend.”
“Addison?” Max called, his voice laced with laughter. “Should I be afraid?”
4 Stars

The House Mate is the third book in the Roommates series, but they are all standalones. Kendall always entertains with her great writing, and funny and sexy characters. Max is successful, handsome and desperately needs a nanny for his daughter. Addison is fresh off a break up with no job and no place to live so when she lands a job as a live in nanny, she’s over the moon. Max isn’t prepared for his reaction to the new nanny. She’s a breath a fresh air and she has an instant bond with Dylan, his daughter. Addison tries her best not to be attracted to Max, but it’s a losing battle. Max shouldn’t want the nanny, how clichéd! But, she’s irresistible. Can Max and Addison defy the odds? What a cute love story! I was a little thrown by how insta-love it was, but I still enjoyed it.

“Sound about right. I was ‘ball’ for the first two days we were together.”

“Yeah, I could see that.  Your head is very round.”

“Don’t worry, baby. This is nothing you can’t handle, and I’ll make sure you’re more than ready for me.”

Kara's Review

5 Stars

Accidentally on Purpose is the third book in the Heartbreaker Bay series and it’s quickly become one of my favorite! These characters have taken up residence in my heart with their sarcasm, wit and beauty. They are truly a family and I want to be a part of it! I’ve been waiting for Archer and Elle’s story. I knew it was going to be explosive and it didn’t disappoint! Archer and Elle have a past and we didn’t know the details until know. When Archer came back into Elle’s life a year ago, the feelings she had for him all those years ago came screaming back. She’s always had a thing for him, but now they just argue and annoy each other. A lot. It’s their foreplay. And it’s off the charts hot. Archer is insanely attracted to Elle, but he keeps his feeling hidden like he keeps everything in his life. Showing emotion is a weakness.  But he’s quickly learning that Elle is his weakness. When a funny game of truth and dare turns steamy, Elle and Archer are forced to reevaluate their relationship. Archer wants all in, but Elle’s reluctant to trust him. Can Archer show Elle they are meant to be together? Will Elle’s past come back and remind her she’s not worthy of him? I loved this story! Archer is so funny, sexy, hot and extra hot in his cargoes and work gear. Oh my. Elle is beautiful, smart, strong and can scare grown men with one look. I loved that Archer wanted Elle and went after her. Hard.

You know that author when you pick up one of their books you just know you are going to get sucked in and not want to put it down. You’re going to laugh, cried, sigh, swoon and laugh more. Jill is one of those authors for me! I can’t wait to see who’s next.

“Guys think about sex every five seconds.”

“Is that true?”

“I don’t know you tell me.”

“I mean, I think about it a lot, but I also think of other things.”

“Like?”

“You.”

“In what way?”

“Naked.”
“Always?”

“Depends,” he said.

“On…?”

“On if I’m hungry or not.”

“Are you angry? Because we do some of our best naked work when you’re angry.”

EXCERPT:

His hand caught her, long fingers wrapping around her elbow and causing all sorts of unwelcome sensations as he pulled her back around.

“What?” she asked.

“Waiting for my apology.”

“Sure,” she said agreeably. “When hell freezes over.” She lifted her chin, grateful for her four-inch heels so that she could almost, kind of, not quite look him in the eyes. “I’m in charge of this building, Archer, which means I’m in charge of everything that happens in it. I’m also in charge of everyone who works for this building.”

He cocked his head, looking amused again. “You want to be the boss of me, Elle?” he asked softly.

I am the boss of you.”

Now he outright smiled and her breath caught. Damn, stupid, sexy smile. And then there was The Body. Yes, she thought of it in capital letters, it deserved the respect. “If you don’t want to be walking funny tomorrow,” she said, “you’ll stop invading my personal-space bubble.”

Complete bravado and they both knew it. She’d only been at this job for a year and it’d come as a surprise to her that he’d been in the building at all. An unfortunate coincidence. Before that it’d been years since they’d had any contact, but she still knew enough to get that no one got the better of him.

He was quick, light on his feet, and physically strong. But that wasn’t what made him so dangerous to her. No, it was his sharp intelligence, his quick wit, how he was willing to go as dark as he needed to in order to do what he thought was right.

And then there was the biggie—the way he had of making her feel shockingly alive.

He did as she asked and stepped back but not before pausing to make sure they both knew who was in control here, and it most definitely wasn’t her.

No one did intimidation like Archer, and in his line of work he could be in a coma and still intimidate everyone in the room. He had muscles on top of muscles but didn’t look beefed up like a body builder might. Instead his body seemed lean and seriously badass, with caramel skin that strayed from light to golden to mocha latte depending on what the season was, giving him a look of indeterminable origin.

And sexiness.

It worked for him, allowing him to fit in to just about any situation. Handy on the job, she imagined. But with her he was careful. Distant. And yet she’d seen the way he sometimes looked at her, and on the rare occasion when he’d touched her, like when he guided her through a door with his hand low on her back, he let himself linger. There was always a shocking and baffling yearning beyond both the glances and the touches.

That, or it was all just wishful thinking.

Not that it mattered since he still held back with her. The problem was she yearned too. Yearned for him to see her as a woman, strong and capable enough to stand at his side.

But after what they’d been through, she knew that would never happen. She turned away, annoyed by how her entire body had gone on high alert as always, every inch of her seeming to hum beneath the surface.

She should have just emailed him.

So, when an injury threatens to end Easton’s season early, the team calls in renowned physical therapist, Doc Dalton, to oversee his recovery. Except it’s not Doc who greets Easton for his first session, but rather, his daughter, Scout. She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.

Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.

And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to maintain the club’s best interest, in regards to whether he’s ready to play.

But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?

Kara's Review

5 Stars

The Player is K. Bromberg’s new masterpiece. I’ve read the Driven series and a few other books by Kristy, and The Player is one of my favorites! I’m a huge sports romance fan and this book has so much baseball heart and these characters have such love for America’s favorite pastime. The writing is fantastic, the characters well developed and the story is great. It’s not your typical spoiled ball player/rehab therapist. Not even close. Easton is baseball royalty and he’s cocky and confident, but he has every right to be. But, he’s out of the game with an injury and when he’s expecting Doc, he gets Doc’s daughter Scout instead. A sexy, athletic, feisty PT. He quickly learns she can handle herself in and out of the locker room. Scout isn’t immune to Easton’s charm, but she has a job to do and it’s not sleep with the player. She has to remind herself to not get attached, but when she spends hours a day with him and learns more about him, her defenses are weakened. Easton is working extremely hard to get his shoulder better and get back out onto the field. After spending time with Scout, he’s determined to be more than just the player to her. He’s never wanted a woman the way he wants her. She’s perfect for him and not just because she gets him. She gets why he loves the game. She gets why he pushes himself. And she gets why it matters so much. Will Easton wear down Scouts walls and convince her there’s more to them than just player and physical therapist? Will Scout be able to put her fears aside and let Easton show her what it’s like to be cared for? I loved this story! So much. It’s deep and emotional. Easton and Scout both have similar past situations and they have their reasons for the walls they’ve erected. But they also know when something  worth fighting for shows up. I loved their banter about baseball. The innuendos were top notch! I laughed, cried, got mad, swooned and literally yelled at the end! I’m not sure how patient I can be waiting for The Catch!

It’s intoxicating. It’s unexpected. It’s everything in a kiss I never knew I needed, and yet somehow knew was missing.

“We’ll start working our way to first base, and then, depending on how you’re feeling, we can move onto second.”

“Nice. You get to run in front next time so I can watch your ass, then.” I laugh.

“Mine?”

“In baseball pants. That’s a requirement.”

Review & Excerpt Blitz – Ain’t He Precious? Juliette Poe

April 14, 2017 By

FanPageBannerNowAvailable

Ain't-He-Precious-FOR WEB-newWelcome to Whynot, North Carolina, population 3,872. It has one stoplight, one bar, and the one-and-only Trixie Mancinkus.

Eleven years ago, Trixie graduated Harvard Law, turned down a job offer from one of the most prestigious law firms in Boston, and headed home to Whynot to open her own firm. Not only did she leave behind the big city, but she also left her boyfriend of three years. And just so we’re clear… that would be me.

So what am I doing in Whynot at this very moment? It seems Trixie needs help with a legal case and for some insane reason, she called on me for assistance. I’ve been in town for five minutes, and I’m every bit as out of place as I feel. Trixie is all sweet, southern curves to my tailored suits and high-priced haircuts. It’s a culture clash of north versus south and about the only thing we have in common is our physical attraction to each other.

But I have a new motto since coming to Whynot: When life hands you lemons, all you need is a little sex and sweet tea to make things better.

Sandra's Review

5 Stars

Ain’t he Precious? is the first novel in the Sex and Sweet Tea series by Juliette Poe. It’s also her debut novel. Yes, I know it’s Sawyer Bennett but it’s a different side of her of writing. A sweeter side. A southern side.
Eleven years. It’s been eleven years since Trixie and Ryland have seen each other. He stayed in Boston after law school and she went home to Whynot, NC. to open her own law practice. That wasn’t the plan after being together for three years but that is what happened. And now, Ryland was in Whynot to assist Trixie with a case. That’s it. One case. Two days. Then he would be back in Boston in his tailored-suits. And Trixie would see that he never would have made it in her town. That was the plan away…
This is such a sweet, sexy, and fun read. I love second chance romances. It’s amazing to see how characters had developed since seeing other last. Watching them find their way to one another again. To figure out if it’s worth the risk of heartbreak a second time around. And with Ryland and Trixie there are some big risks.
I think it rocks that Sawyer went a different route with first The Hard Truth About Sunshine and now with this book. It really shows that she can write just about anything. This one is one the sweeter side. Sunshine is more emotional. Suspense. And of course she has her hot books.
Overall…it’s a quick read full of heart, laughter, heat and sweet, sweet tea. I am excited about the next book. This town of Whynot has my heart.
P.S I Love Pap!
Quotes:
“Smile for the camera, city boy.”
“I’m here to steal your virtue,” I say, not in a whisper, and that only to make Ry more nervous.
“Trixie,” he says as his eyes cut to the bedroom door and then back to me. “You’re seriously going to get me killed.”
5 Stars

Ain’t he Precious is the first book from Juliette Poe, alter ego of the ridiculously talented Sawyer Bennett. I’ve read all of Sawyer’s books, so of course I’m going to read Juliette’s. Ain’t he Precious is a sweet, small town romance with a little bit of heat and a whole lotta heart. I especially loved this story being a Yankee myself. Ryland and Trixie were in a relationship in college. They were in love and thought they had a future together, but Trixie decided to move back home to North Carolina. Eleven years later and she’s practicing law in her home town and needs help on a case. She needs Ryland’s help. He drops everything to help the girl who got away. After only a few minutes together, their chemistry is still there. Will Ryland be able to walk away this time? Does Trixie realize she made a mistake by walking away from the love of her life? I loved this story! I love small town romance and second chance romances! Ryland is smart, sexy and such a Yankee, bless his heart. Trixie is sexy, funny and loyal. I’m already in love with the secondary characters and can’t wait for more in this series!

It’s the North versus the South all over again.

“I’m afraid if I kiss you, I won’t stop.”

Over lettuce wraps, I let her vent more about her brother but I only let this go on during the appetizer. Once our entrees arrive, I insist we change the subject. She’s not calming down, only getting more worked up, and diversion has always worked best with Trixie.

“Raleigh seems to be a nice town,” I say conversationally in an effort to get her relaxed.

She rolls her eyes at me because as much as I know how to “handle” her when her temper is spiked, she recognizes the fact that I am indeed handling her. Apparently, she finds it adorable. She cuts a piece of her orange chicken and gives in to my attempt to switch the conversation. “It really is. It’s spread out so you don’t have that overwhelming big-city feel, but you have all the luxuries a big city affords like museums, professional sports, fine dining, etcetera.”

“Overwhelming is an interesting choice of words,” I observe. “You didn’t feel that way in Boston, did you?”

I’m surprised when her cheeks turn a bit red. Her voice is reluctant when she admits, “Yeah… it was a bit too much for me.”

My mouth hangs open as I stare at her. How could I not know that? We had made plans to live in Boston, and there was a time when she was completely on board.

“I’m sorry,” she blurts out. “I know what you’re thinking… Why would I have even considered all those plans we’d made if I felt that way?”

“Got to admit… this is a bit surprising to hear.”

Trixie puts her fork down and levels her gaze on me. “Ry… I loved you. And I loved Cambridge. It was small and well… comfortable. It wasn’t small like Whynot, but it reminded me of home a bit. But honestly, I was only considering staying there in Boston because of you. I didn’t like it at all. Too many people. Too much concrete and glass. Too much noise. It’s just not me.”

“You should have said something a lot earlier than you did,” I reprimand her quietly. I can’t help feeling a bit angry over this revelation, because who knows what would have happened had we had some honest discussions about where we wanted to go that could suit both of us.

“Would it have changed anything?” she asks me bluntly. “You were set on Boston. You wanted that job at Hayes Lockamy. You worked your ass off at Harvard and the clerkships to get that job offer. It was everything to you.”

“It wasn’t everything,” I tell her sharply.

“Maybe not,” she retorts. “But it clearly meant more than me. As I recall, I asked you to come to Whynot to practice, and I got a resounding ‘no’ to that offer.”

“You sprung that on me at literally the last minute, Trixie,” I say angrily. “After I’d accepted the job offer at Hayes Lockamy. You didn’t give me any time to process any of it.”

“And you didn’t bother to try to talk me into staying,” she snaps.

“Seriously, Trix,” I say in exasperation. “I’ve been here two days, and I’ve watched you in your element. You were born to live here. This is where you’re supposed to be. Being a small-town lawyer in Whynot surrounded by your close-knit, if not nutty, family is what brings you joy. Are you seriously trying to infer that you would have left all of this to stay in Boston with me if I’d just tried to talk you into staying?”

“No, what I’m saying,” she sneers at me as she leans across the table but I don’t miss the light sheen of tears in her eyes, “is that you and I clearly weren’t meant to be, and we’re both better off for making the choices we did.”

Now that hits me hard, right in the middle of my chest, and I have to resist the urge to rub my knuckles over my breastbone to ease the pain.

Trixie merely pushes up from her chair, grabs her purse, and practically runs out of the restaurant.

“Shit,” I mutter as I stand up. I grab my wallet, take out enough money to cover the meal and tip, and toss it down on the table.

I jet out of the restaurant, scan the area, and see Trixie walking quickly toward her car. I wouldn’t put it past her to jump in it and drive off without me, so I break into a fast trot to catch up with her. My hand latches onto her elbow just as she reaches her car, and I spin her to face me.

“What the hell, Trix?” I ask her with frustration, anger, and a little bit of self-loathing that I let the conversation get so out of hand. I’ve always been the mild-mannered one between the two of us, knowing how to deftly control and sidestep her temper so it doesn’t get the better of her.

Or me.

I brace, expect her to rail and rant some more. Instead, she launches herself right at me, making a tiny hop to throw her arms around my neck. Her mouth comes to mine hard as one of her hands grips into my hair, fisting it tight.

Jesus Christ… stars wink in my vision at the feel of her mouth on mine, so long forgotten and yet completely familiar all at once. I don’t think—just act. My arms band around her tight, hauling her body to mine. I push her back into the side of her car, tilt my head, and I kiss her back with every bit of longing and regret that she seems to be mutually feeling in this moment.

CHAPTER ONE

Sam

I wake with a start, sitting straight up in my bed. Cool air fills my lungs when I gasp, pulling a deep breath in. My eyes slowly adjust to the dark room, and I rub the sweat from my forehead before swinging my feet over the edge of the bed and resting my arms on my knees. The dream is always the same, the piercing pain of the bullets hitting my flesh…and the fear of dying, scared and alone.

An exaggerated huff leaves my mouth when I see the alarm clock on the bedside table. It reads four-ten in the morning. That puts three hours and twenty minutes of sleep under my belt. It’s the longest I’ve slept since I arrived in Los Angeles three days ago.

I’m used to surviving on very little sleep, but the nightmares of that night are back and making it more difficult to find rest. I push myself out of bed and throw on a pair of athletic shorts and t-shirt. Grabbing my phone and hotel room key, I head to the gym. With no one else up this early, I play music directly from my phone while watching CNN with subtitles as I get my daily seven-mile run in.

I like running outdoors better, but it’s easier to use the gym and treadmill here at the hotel. My phone pings with incoming texts, but I focus on my run. The burn in my lungs relieves the stress in my shoulders. Sweat coats my skin and drips from my nose as I increase my speed—pushing myself harder. The treadmill roars as I increase the speed yet again, and my heart pounds wildly against my ribcage as my lungs fight for air.

Pain—it’s the only way I know I’m alive.

Pain in my chest. My mind. My body.

The treadmill slows just as my phone pings again, multiple times, alerting me to more incoming text messages—messages that I ignore. I’ve got three days’ worth waiting for a response, and I’m in no hurry to get to them. Transferring to the ATF offices in Los Angeles makes for an easy reason to avoid everyone and everything. Avoidance is what I do best.

I grab a bottle of water and return to my room for a shower before heading into my new office. New office. New job. New city. New state. New life.

A chance to start over. A chance to leave the past where it belongs…in the past. I pull a suit out of the closet and turn on the shower to let the water warm up.

Raking my hands over my face, I do my best to shove the events of last year to the back of my mind, but the life goes out of my eyes when I see the scars scattered across my chest. They’re a constant reminder of the day I lost almost everything…including my life.

Standing in front of the mirror, I run my hand up over my chest and shoulder, my fingertips brushing the smooth surface of the scars spread across the left side of my chest. I ball my hands tightly and release, repeating two more times, a coping mechanism my physical therapist taught me to deal with my anger.

I step into the shower and let the hot water ease my tension. My neck, shoulders, and back instantly begin to relax, and I allow my mind to let go at the same time. “New beginnings,” I mumble to myself as the shower cleanses me of my anger, a baptism of sorts.

I dress and am out the door in less than thirty minutes, easing my car onto the bumper-to-bumper packed L.A. freeway. A commute that would take me less than ten minutes in Phoenix takes me damn near forty-five. I find a covered parking spot just as my phone begins to ring. A number I don’t recognize flashes on the screen, and I decline the call. I don’t have the time nor patience to deal with unknown callers. Gathering my suit coat and phone, I find my way to the main entrance, using the security badge that was sent to me prior to my arrival to allow me entrance into the building.

My phone begins ringing again just as I’m weaving my way through the lobby and headed to the elevators. Same number. This time I press accept and answer. Before I even speak, the female voice on the other end catches me off guard.

“Oh my god, I didn’t expect you to answer.” She pauses. “I was leaving a voice mail and my call dropped so I was just calling back to finish the message.” I hear her sigh. “This is Kate Stevens. Nick Stevens sister. He gave me your number.” Nick Stevens, my new boss. “He mentioned that you might need a place to rent. I have a guesthouse he thought would be perfect for you, and he asked me to call you. I’m sorry if this caught you off guard. He said he was going to speak with you.” She finally stops speaking so I can get a word in.

“Hello, Kate. Nick didn’t mention this to me.”

I hear her sigh loudly. “He’s the most unorganized human being alive,” she mumbles, and I can’t help but chuckle. I’ve met the guy three times, and she’s right from my observation as well. “I’m so sorry to have called you,” she apologizes.

“Don’t be. I’d love to check out the place. I got here Friday, and I’ve been staying in a hotel while I look for something more permanent—”

“Don’t feel obligated,” she cuts me off.

“I don’t,” I answer her honestly. “I’m mainly looking for something not too far from the office and just somewhere to lay my head. Nothing fancy. I won’t be around much because all I ever do is work.”

“Sounds like Nick,” she says with a small laugh. “You’re welcome to check out the house anytime. It’s close to your office, but it’s a little off the beaten path near the foothills. Either call or text me, and we’ll schedule a time for you to stop by, or have Nick show it to you anytime. He knows where I hide the spare key. I’m also not home often so coordinating our schedules might be tough.”

I hear a horn honk in the background as she mutters a string of curse words worthy of an R-rating, and I can’t help but laugh. “That sounds great. Thanks for calling, Kate.”

She ends the call without another word, and I’m left standing in the lobby of my new office, laughing.

The morning is spent being briefed on projects that the team is working on and investigating. I’ll be taking over a case that my predecessor left when he was promoted to a position in Washington D.C., as well as anything new that comes in.

There’s a quick knock on my doorjamb before Nick sticks his head in my office. “You got any lunch plans?”

“Not today,” I toss over my shoulder as I close the folder on my desk.

“Let’s go grab a quick bite. I need to get the hell out of this office.” He loosens the tie around his neck. Nick is about my height and build, probably a few years older than me, California born and raised, and started in the San Diego field office. Worked his way up to Los Angeles and plans to retire here.

I grab my phone and slide it into the pocket of my suit jacket.

“How’s the first day treating you?” he asks as we weave through cubicles lining the rectangular office floor outside our offices.

“Good. Just briefing myself on the Navarro case.”

“We’ve been working on that for years,” he grumbles. “Hoping you can close the deal on that one.” His car beeps as we approach and he unlocks the doors. “Hey,” he buckles himself in and starts the car. “You do great work. I heard how you took down the Estrada cartel.” He slides his sunglasses on his face.

My heart races as I wonder how much he knows—if he’s aware the Estradas are my family. It was well known in the Phoenix office, but I’m not sure how much Los Angeles knows about my ‘family’ history. I nod but don’t say anything.

“You’re the best of the best, which is why you’re going to take down Navarro,” he continues as we take off down the road. “It was easy for me to approve the transfer request.”

“Thanks.” I offer a tight smile and turn to look out the passenger window.

“I’m excited for you to kick ass here in L.A. So why the hell did you want to leave Phoenix anyway? There’s so much shit going on in that office, you must’ve had years of work still.”

I blow a puff of air from my mouth. “My injuries—”

“Shit, I forgot about that. Sorry, continue.” He winces as I continue.

“My injuries fully healed with time and physical therapy, and I wrapped up the cases I was working on.” I look at him out of the corner of my eye to gauge his response. He raps his thumb against the steering wheel and nods his head slowly. “And it just felt like it was a good time to start fresh. Start over with a clean slate.”

He turns his head to look at me. “I cannot tell you how lucky we are to have you here in Los Angeles. I hope you’re fully prepared to kick ass and take names.”

I can’t help but smile, appreciating the vote of confidence.

***

As the day winds down and the office empties, I find myself wrapped up in the case file on my desk, familiarizing myself with all the key players, the locations where the guns are being held, and the evidence that we have to date, along with notes on what we still need to document.

Nick doesn’t knock when he enters my office this time, rather throwing himself into the chair across my desk with an exaggerated sigh.

“What’s the sigh for?” I ask him as I tuck the case file into my bag. I’ll finish combing through the remaining details tonight and make my own notes. I have a system for how I set up my case folders, and I need to rework all of these.

“Just a Monday,” he states, looking around my bare office. “You going to decorate or something? Throw a poster on the wall?” He waves his hand around, gesturing to the stark gray walls.

“Decorate? No. I do have some awards and diplomas I’ll hang once they arrive. They’re being sent from Phoenix.”

He nods, content with that answer.

I clear my throat. “Speaking of decorating, I got a call from Kate.” I raise my eyebrows and sit back in my desk chair. “She said something about having a guesthouse to rent. Were you going to tell me she was going to call?”

“I did. I sent you a text on Saturday.” He relaxes in his chair and props a foot on his opposite knee. I really need to stop ignoring my messages. He continues, “I stopped by to see her this weekend and forgot she had that guesthouse. Immediately thought of you when I saw it.”

“Thanks. I need to find some time to check it out. Living out of a hotel room is less than ideal.” I reach over and power down my laptop.

“Let’s go now. It’s just down the road a few miles. I know where she keeps the spare key if she’s not there.”

“She also mentioned that,” I laugh.

“Grab your shit and let’s go. You can follow me there.” He jumps up from the chair and quickly pulls his tie off. Nick looks more like an outdoorsman than a senior agent with the ATF. He looks uncomfortable in a suit. I see him more as the park ranger type, running around in cargos and hiking boots.

I follow suit, loosening my tie as I follow him to our cars.

A few miles is more like fifteen, and about half of those miles are in bumper-to-bumper L.A. traffic. Something that I’m not sure I’ll ever adjust to. Once we exit the freeway, we wind through gorgeous neighborhoods all the way back to the base of the foothills. I would never in a million years guess the house we pull up to is a house in a suburb of Los Angeles. It sits on what I assume is about an acre of lush green land with neighbors spread out down a long secluded, tree-lined street. The ranch style house is simple yet modern with an updated exterior, wood shutters, and wrought iron accessories.

“Not a bad drive, eh,” Nick says as we both step out of our cars in the driveway. “I should say for L.A. standards. If your commute is under an hour, you’re pretty much living the life,” he laughs.

It really wasn’t a bad commute. I eyeball the watch on my wrist and the drive was just under thirty minutes. Nick reaches inside a hanging planter that swings from the covered front porch and pulls out a key. He waves me toward the side of the house where a brick sidewalk snakes around to the guesthouse that sits just off the main house. It looks exactly like the main house, just slightly smaller.

“This is it,” he says, sliding the key into the front door. “One bedroom, a small office slash library, kitchen, living room, and one and a half baths.”

We step inside. It’s obviously been remodeled recently. The smell of fresh paint hits me as I walk deeper into the house. Everything is brand new, sleek, and modern. Bright white trim and doors offset light gray walls. A dark wood floor makes the bright white kitchen pop against the stainless steel appliances.

“The only thing that’s missing is a washer and dryer. She said she’d order those once she leased the house. The laundry room is off the back.” He points to a door off the kitchen. “It’s a large pantry and a laundry room.”

I’m impressed with what I’ve seen thus far. I walk through the open living room and down the hall to the bedroom. It’s large and bright with one wall of windows that start near the ceiling and stretch about three quarters of the way down the wall. Long, dark gray curtains hang to each side of the paneled windows that overlooks more of the lush backyard. There’s a single French door that leads to a small brick patio off the master bedroom, and a table and chairs sit out there. In the middle of the table is a fire pit. I instantly imagine myself relaxing around this table with a beer after a long day at the office.

I head back down the hallway where I stop and peek my head in the office. It’s got two glass French doors that lead into the square room. One entire wall has built in bookshelves and a built in desk. It’s the perfect home office.

I scan the living room and kitchen again and make note that my dark furniture will fit perfectly in the space and complements the gray and white theme throughout. This might be the easiest decision I’ve made since deciding to move to Los Angeles.

Nick steps out front while I take one last look around, making mental notes of the space and things I’ll need shipped from Phoenix.

After we step outside and Nick locks the door, I hear him shuffling behind me on the brick walkway. “So what do you think?”

“Perfect. It’s everything I was looking for,” I say as I spin around and am met face-to-face with the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. I stumble momentarily because, for half a second, those words mean so much more than just the house I was looking at.

“I’m Kate,” she says, her voice strong and secure. She holds her hand out to shake mine. She’s tall with light brown hair that hangs just past her shoulders, and she’s wearing a navy blue dress and heels that put her at almost my six-foot-two. Confident. She’s confident. I can read a woman by the way she carries herself, the tone of her voice, and what she wears.

I take her hand in mine and smile. “Sam. Sam Cortez. I’ll take it.” Again, those words mean so much more than just the house.

Her lips turn into a half smile, and she holds eye contact with me. She licks her lips and tilts her head before glancing over to Nick and then back to me. “Nice to meet you, Sam Cortez. Welcome home.”

And my heart begins to beat again for the first time in eighteen months.

IMG_5273I met Bianca in an elevator.

She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.

The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.

She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags”—her afternoon appointment.

Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type—snobby, over educated, silver- spooned men who didn’t appreciate the simple things in life.

So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t—a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn’t want it to end.

I began dating her as “Jay”—all the while letting her interview the real me over email.

I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.

I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.

I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.

And she was falling for two men.

Only, both men were me.

And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.

Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for what came after.

All good things must come to an end, right?
Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

Sandra's Review

Fuck…that was amazing! I have read all of the books this incredible duo has written together. I have so much faith in their words that I don’t even read the blurbs until after I finish the books. I don’t want to spoil anything and the synopsis is kick ass and explains its perfectly so I will make this short and sweet.
Bianca scores a exclusive interview with the Dexter Truitt. A mysterious millionaire CEO. Instead of making her interview on time she gets stuck in the elevator with a smartass, sexy, and intriguing bike messenger named Jay Reed. After having some awkward but fun times in the elevator they spend the day together. What she doesn’t know is that she just met Dex and he wants her so badly that he will do anything to spend more time with her. So much so that he is willing to go insane. Both Dex and Jay are getting to know her in different ways. But what will happen when she finds out that she has been lied to by both men? She has only ever wanted to find someone that could be completely honest with her.
I have never read a book this fast in my life. I devoured it. I had to know what Dex was going to do next to dig his hole any deeper. He is damn good with a shovel. It’s fucking hilarious the lengths he goes to. I knew I was going to fall in love with him when I heard the first words out of his mouth. As for Bianca, I knew from the very first line of the book that she wasn’t someone you wanted to mess with. Together, they are everything. Their banter from the very beginning was like a match made in an elevator. Balls. It got really good when those came into play. I loved the way Dex and Bianca got to know each other. So much fun!!
Yes. This book is fucking hilarious and sexy but it’s more than that. It’s complicated with some intensity. There is also swoon-worthiness, and ass-kicking moments. It really has it all. The writing is perfection. The characters are extremely lovable. And the storyline is unique. It’s most definitely my favorite book by Vi and Penelope! You do not want to miss it. If you enjoy twists, men in suits that will make you melt, watching that man slowing lose his mind, sexual innuendos, and an independent woman…you have to read this book!
Overall…One of my favorite books of 2017! I loved every minute of it. It was such a fun, sexy, and swoons ride! I want to read it again. Now. It’s that awesome.
P.S. Ruff!
Quotes:
“Yeah. Maybe. It’s something I kind of do by myself to relieve stress. I’ve never done it in front of an audience before. I’ll have to work up to that.”
“That’s just cruel. I already hate that guy enough as it is.”
“You don’t like my nipples?”
“I like them very much. Too fucking much. I can’t concentrate while they’re taunting me.”

Mister Moneybags is another addition to the greatness that is the duo of Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. I almost have no words for this masterpiece. I devoured it in mere hours and could not stop reading. I have no idea if my house caught on fire or what the hell happened around me. I. Could. Not. Stop. Reading. It’s one of the best books of the year. I laughed, I cried, I got hot and bothered and I said ‘oh shit’ a lot. I mean, a lot. It’s not an emotional angsty read, but the twist and turns had my heart racing and my breathing increasing. And I really needed a damn drink! You know when the perfect books comes into your life at the perfect moment? Mister Moneybags is that book for me. It was just what I needed! Buddy reading with my other half (my other blogging half ;)), also helped with the obsession that is Dex. Being able to vent, yell, cry and share your thoughts in real time just heightens the experience of an epic read. A chance meeting in an elevator has a sexy, rich CEO lying about his identity to spend time with a girl. It’s an understandable lie, but one that quickly gets out of control and seems to take on a life of its own. Then not only is Dex’s alter ego, Jay, spending time with the sexy Bianca, Dex is also talking and flirting with her. Bianca is attracted to both men. They are so different, but she can’t stop thinking about either of them. Dex can’t stand the pressure. He hates lying. But he doesn’t know what to do! Come clean and risk losing the only girl he’s ever had feelings for? Keep pretending and drive himself insane? What happens when Bianca finds out? Can Dex get her to trust again? What else does fate have up its sleeve for these two? I for one loved watching Dex go insane. His inner dialogue was fantastic and I pretty much laughed throughout the entire book. I mean who doesn’t love a good ball joke, a sexy man trying to whittle his wood, a greyhound who understands and a family web of secrets? I do. I loved it all. Dex is everything I wanted him to be. He’s sexy, smart, hilarious, dirty, insane and loving. Bianca is strong, independent and gorgeous. They are the perfect match.

” I have some balls you could massage if you’re in a pickle.”

“Don’t sound so shocked. Girls with brains use obscene four letter words and their bodies to win bets, too, you know.”

A v-parting tool? You don’t say? I have one of those myself.

I felt a pull to her that was there the first time I’d met her, even before the lights turned on in that dark elevator. We were connected in some way; I was sure of it. I just needed to show her it was more than physical.

“I could provide some warm cream if you prefer?”

“You’re such a pig.”

“All I heard was strategically sticking shit in various parts and edible… I’m good.”

Release Blitz, 5 Heart Reviews & Excerpt – Ain’t He Precious? Juliette Poe

April 11, 2017 By

Catfish

Suddenly, my pole jerks in my hands, and I instinctively snap the tip upward into the air. I feel something catch as the pole bends in an extreme arc.

“Holy shit,” I exclaim as I sit up straighter in the boat.

“That’s a big one,” Pap says, and Trixie laughs with delight. “Now… keep the rod up and reel it in.”

I plant my feet hard on the bottom of the boat and crank my catch in. My heart is racing because I don’t know what’s on the other end of the line, but it feels massive. I reel and reel and reel, watching as the end of the line in the water comes closer to the boat. I see a flash of grayish-brown thrash at the top of the water before the fish dives back down deep, but I keep cranking that spinner.

Pap sets his pole aside, grabs a net, and leans forward, balancing himself with a hand on the edge of the boat. I give another mighty heave on the spinner’s handle, and the fish comes to the surface.

“Oh, my God,” Trixie practically shrieks with excitement as her feet come off the edge of the boat. She leans closer to me. “He caught Ol’ Mud. I was knee high to a grasshopper the last time someone managed that.”

Pap grunts in acknowledgment, scooping the net into the water under my catch. He proceeds to pull it up, and in it is the biggest, ugliest fish I’ve ever seen in my life. Not that I’ve seen many up close and personal. I mean, I went snorkeling in the Cayman’s once, but those were all brightly colored fish with long, flowing tails. This thing is indeed the color of mud, with enormous eyes that seem to be rolling and long whiskers sticking out from around its mouth.

“What the hell is that thing?” I ask in horror.

“That’s a flathead catfish,” Pap says as he hauls him in and carefully maneuvers him out of the net with practiced efficiency. He pulls the hook out of the corner of the fish’s mouth and then holds him up for me to see.

The fish is massive and thrashes in Pap’s hands, but he grips him firmly before pushing him my way. “Want to hold him?”

I recoil slightly. “Um… no, but thank you.”

Trixie snickers behind me. “Oh, God… ain’t he precious?”

Pap snorts but doesn’t give me too much shit. “Suit yourself. Take a picture, Trixie.”

I turn in my seat and watch Trixie pull her phone from her pocket. Pap scoots closer to me and holds the damn fish up over my shoulder—which, in addition to fish, smells like mud too—and chuckles, “Smile for the camera, city boy.”

Trixie holds the phone out, grinning as she takes a picture of Pap and me as he holds that slimy, nasty-looking catfish. I know my manhood took a bit of a ding with my refusal to hold it, and I can’t say I’m thrilled that Trixie thinks I’m precious, but screw it… not going to apologize for my failure to bond with that smelly thing.

To my amazement, Pap leans over the side of the boat and slides it gently into the water while murmuring, “Until we meet again, Ol’ Mud.”

“You let it go?” I ask incredulously. While the thing was scary looking as all get out, I’ve eaten catfish before and it’s delicious. I have also witnessed Catherine’s cooking firsthand, and I bet she’d do heavenly things to that fish. Besides… I thought that’s what you did in the south. You hunted shit and you ate it.

“Ol’ Mud’s been in this lake for years,” Trixie says by way of explanation. “He’s rarely been caught, but we always release him. He’s like an icon around here. The fact that you caught him, and in the morning, is amazing.”

“Really?” I ask, a small pattering of pride thumping in my chest.

“Flathead’s normally sleep during the day, usually down under lake debris,” Pap explains. “They’re easiest to catch at night, but I don’t think Ol’ Mud’s ever been caught in daylight hours, right, Trix?”

“Right, Pap,” she says and then winks at me. “We might turn you into a southern boy yet, Ry.”
