SYNOPSIS

I’ve spent years hoping someone would finally hear me. It’s easier not to try anymore…
Ten years after leaving his small Minnesota hometown in his rearview mirror for what Nolan Grainger was sure would be the last time, life has decided to throw the talented musician a curveball and send him back to the town he lived in but was never really home.

At twenty-eight, Nolan has traveled the world as a successful concert violinist with some of the best symphonies in the country. But success breeds envy, and when Nolan’s benefactor and lover decides Nolan has flown high enough, he cruelly clips Nolan’s wings. The betrayal and ensuing scandal leaves the violinist’s career in shambles and with barely enough money to start fresh somewhere beyond his vindictive ex’s powerful reach. But just as he’s ready to get his life back on track, Nolan gets the call he’s been dreading.

After a stroke leaves his father a partial invalid, duty-bound Nolan returns to Pelican Bay and a life he’s spent years trying to forget. When he’s forced to use the last of his own money to keep from losing the family home, desperation has him turning to the one man he’d hoped never to see again…

Even if I could speak, there wouldn’t be anyone there to listen…
Pelican Bay’s golden boy, Dallas Kent, had the quintessential perfect life. Smart, gorgeous, and popular, the baseball phenom was well on his way to a life filled with fame and fortune. But more importantly, he had a one-way ticket out of Pelican Bay and far away from the family who used love as currency and whose high expectations were the law of the land. But a stormy night, sharp highway curve and one bad decision changed everything, leaving Dallas with nothing.

Because the accident that took his parents, his future and his crown as the boy who could do no wrong, also stole his voice.

Despised for the horrific wreck that ended the lives of two of Pelican Bay’s most respected residents, Dallas has retreated to a secluded stretch of land where he’s found refuge in a menagerie of unwanted animals that don’t care that he once had the world at his feet or that he’ll never speak again.

But when the quiet, bookish boy he wasn’t allowed to notice in school suddenly reappears ten years later at Dallas’s wildlife rehab center in desperate need of a job, Dallas is thrust back into a world he’s worked hard to escape.

Dallas’s silence was supposed to send Nolan scurrying, but what if Nolan ends up being the one person who finally hears him?

Will two men who’ve been fleeing from the past finally come home to Pelican Bay for good or will the silence drive them apart forever?

5 Stars

I’m one of Sloane Kennedy’s biggest fans. Since picking up Absolution, I’ve gently stalked her on social media and have read everything since. Sloane is such a fantastic writer. She writes emotional circumstances so incredibly well. There’s always heart, heat, humor, sadness and sexiness. Locked in Silence is the first book in a new series, Pelican Bay. I always get very excited when my favorite authors write new series’. Not because I don’t love their others, but I love to read new characters in new settings. And since Sloane’s writing keeps getting better and better, I’m extra excited to read anything and everything. Nolan and Dallas knew each other in high school. They weren’t friends, but they remember one another. Dallas was the star baseball player with a career ahead of him. Nolan was a concert voilinst with the talent to take him all the way to the top. Circumstances beyond their control have them meeting again years later back home in Pelican Bay. Dallas always saw Nolan because he was beautiful and talented, but he never spoke to him. They just didn’t run in the same circles. Nolan had a crush on Dallas because he was a gorgeous baseball player. So when they meet again ten years later, the sparks fly whether they want them to or not. Dallas lost his voice in a horrific accident and Nolan lost his career. They take comfort in each other and not because they are the only ones there, because they are the only ones who understand. Nolan can hear Dallas even though he can’t talk and Dallas can read between the lines of every word Nolan speaks. There are obstacles, angry, mean town’s people and family who have no idea how to love. Can these two men find solace in each other while they figuratively and literally fight the world? Will they forgive the sins of the past and move toward their future together? I loved this story. So. Damn. Much. Dallas is so great! He can’t speak, but he says so much. Nolan is quiet and slight, but he’s not a pushover! They complement each other in the best ways.

They are an unlikely pair who are perfect for each other. And they prove that silence can speak volumes.

His eyes held mine and we just hung here for a moment. Talking without speaking. Hearing without listening.

I’d even had plenty of fantasies where vertically would have been extremely desirable. But I also wanted to do the stuff that came before and after. I wanted to be able to touch him whenever I wanted.

EXCERPT

Nolan’s gaze returned to me and the smile fell from his pretty mouth as his eyes held mine. My body instantly responded. Nolan swallowed hard and then his tongue was coming out to wet his lips. I groaned and Nolan snapped his head up at the sound. I half expected him to accuse me of lying about not being able to talk or something, he was staring at me so hard.
“Sorry,” he said, quickly dropping his eyes. “Google said you can still make certain sounds because you’re forcing air out of your body but I…”
His voice dropped off suddenly as he realized what he’d said.
I, myself, was stunned.
He’d googled my condition?
Why?
“Shit, I mean…Oh God, I’m sorry, Dallas. I wasn’t trying to pry into your business but I was curious last night and…fuck.”
I smiled because there was just no getting over how cute he was when he got all flustered. His skin had flushed a pretty shade of pink and I was half tempted to reach out and touch it just to see how warm it was.
Yeah, I really did need to get him out of here.
Since his eyes were downcast, I tapped his arm and then flashed him the okay sign. He nodded but didn’t say anything. I didn’t like how dejected he looked. But I ignored the compelling need to touch him again and went to the door to open it, hoping he’d get the message.
He did.
I followed him outside and watched as he headed towards his car. It wasn’t the same car he’d been driving the night before, so I could only assume that one was in the shop. I watched as Nolan searched his pocket for his keys. He cast me a glance and nodded his head briefly. “Thanks again for last night.” He didn’t wait for me to respond as he went around to the driver’s side of the car. His eyes were downcast as he reached for the door handle, but once he wrapped his fingers around it, he just hung there.
I waited for him to move or, at the very least, say something, but it was like he was locked in place. I was about to tap on the hood of his car to get his attention when I saw his shoulders start to shake. Despair tore through me as I realized what was happening.
And how wholly unequipped I was to handle it.
“Dallas?” Nolan whispered. He didn’t look up as he dashed at his eyes.
At the tears I knew were there, but that I couldn’t see because he refused to look up at me.
“Can I…can I see the baby raccoon?” Nolan asked, his voice barely there.
Something inside of me twisted painfully at the all too familiar scene of the Nolan Grainger who’d haunted my dreams in school.
And not in the good way.
As badly as I wanted to send him on his way, I couldn’t. It was like I was back in my Jeep watching Nolan wipe those fucking eggs off his body as he softly cried.
But there hadn’t been anyone to hear him.
Except me.

And I’d been a goddamned coward.

LIVE NOW!!

Defiance

The Protectors #9
By Sloane Kennedy
  Hosted by Jo&Isalovebooks Blog

SYNOPSIS

All I ever wanted was to serve and protect my country. It ended up costing me everything…

At 49, Vincent St. James has learned to live with the choices he’s made, even if he isn’t always proud of them. After the military he was practically born into decided his sexuality was more important than his impeccable service record, Vincent lost everything, including the man he’d planned to spend the rest of his life with.

And a man with nothing to live for has nothing to lose.

With a bone deep hatred of all things government, Vincent found another way to serve his country, but it too came at a steep cost that he never could have foreseen. Dealing in secrets and death means there’s always someone waiting around the next corner trying to either take his place or bury their secrets along with his body. Even if he wanted out, it’s far too late for that.

When he’s given the chance to help out a friend who once had his back when others didn’t, he jumps at the chance to repay the favor. Even if it means protecting the kind of man he despises most…a power-hungry politician looking to push his own agenda on an unsuspecting public.

I made a terrible choice three years ago and it cost me the only person who ever really mattered to me. But maybe there’s another way I can make things right…

30-year-old Nathan Wilder can’t take back the moment he betrayed his twin brother, but he can try to make sure that the legacy of hate that drove him to turn on Brody never has a chance to rear its ugly head again. And if that means going against his powerful father’s right-wing political constituency in a down and dirty race for a seat in the U.S. Senate, then so be it. But when the threats that had been limited to harmless emails start taking an uglier turn, culminating in a violent attack that leaves no doubt as to the assailant’s intent, Nathan is thrown into the direct path of a mysterious and dangerous man who may end up forcing Nathan to confront truths he just isn’t ready to face yet.

Protecting him was supposed to be a favor for a friend and nothing more. Once he’s safe, I’ll let him go. I have to…

Protecting Nathan was supposed to be a walk in the park for a guy like Vincent. But nothing about the younger man is what he’d been expecting, especially the long-dead feelings Nathan stirs in him.

The feelings that aren’t just about protection.

Which is a problem, because while the threat against Nathan is temporary, the danger that’s become a way of life for Vincent is just waiting for the next thing it can take from him. Caring about someone means painting a target on their back and Vincent is done losing people he loves.
But letting Nathan go may not be as easy at seems…especially when Nathan decides to finally stand up and fight for what…and who he truly wants.

As I was tucking my phone into my pocket, I saw Nathan grab his off the floor.
When he went to put it in his shirt pocket, I shook my head and said, “No, that stays here.”
“I need my phone,” Nathan said.
“You need it more than you need to breathe?” I asked impatiently. “Because it’s traceable.” I reached for it to take it away from him, but he stepped back. I got into his space and ripped the phone from his hand. “Is your career really more important than your life?” I ground out. “Because it sure as shit isn’t more important than mine.” I dropped the phone to the floor and made a move to crush it under my heel, but Nathan suddenly lunged forward.
“Don’t!” he yelled. My instincts took over and I grabbed him by the arms and swept his legs from underneath him, taking us both to the floor. He let out a whoosh of air as my body crashed down on his. Too late, I remembered the way he’d been holding his side after the earlier attack.
But I didn’t apologize.
“You lay your hands on me one more time-”
“My brother’s messages!” Nathan shouted, his voice thick with emotion.
“What?” I asked, startled.
Nathan drew in several breaths. “I want the phone because it has my brother’s voicemail messages on it,” he whispered. His whiskey-colored eyes met mine. “Please,” he murmured.
I suddenly became very aware of his hard body sprawled beneath mine. During the scuffle, one of my legs had gotten wedged between his, putting our cocks precariously close to one another. I had his hands pinned to the floor and I could feel his body trembling beneath mine.
I knew it was likely just the lingering shock, but I couldn’t deny what having him completely at my mercy was doing to me. Especially since he wasn’t fighting me. I hadn’t given much thought to whether or not Nathan was gay like his brother, but I sure as shit was thinking about it now.
“Please,” Nathan repeated, and a perverse part of me wondered what he was actually asking me for. I knew I needed to get off him, but I found myself reluctant to move. Nathan’s fingers flexed, drawing my gaze to them. It would be so easy to move my hands up to link my fingers with his. I shifted slightly to take the pressure off the knee that I had wedged between his legs, but the move caused my dick to brush his. I jerked my eyes to Nathan’s when I heard him let out the tiniest of whimpers.
“Let me up,” he suddenly said, and then he was pushing at me. I could have easily kept him there on the floor like that and taken what I wanted…a taste of him. But I shifted off him instead and then snatched his phone off the floor. Nathan struggled to his feet, but didn’t try to grab the phone again.
My brain told my fingers to drop the damn thing so I could crush it, because anything less wasn’t safe. But my body disobeyed the order and instead, I turned the phone off and handed it to Nathan. “Leave it off.”
I turned to head towards the hallway leading to the front door, but stopped when Nathan said, “Wait.”
I forced myself to turn around. “What?”
“I don’t even know your name.”
There were a million things I could have said to him, none of which included actually giving him my name. Just like with the phone, it wasn’t safe for him to know who I was.
“Vincent,” I said.
“Vincent,” Nathan murmured, more to himself than anything else. “Thank you, Vincent.”
I didn’t want his thanks. I didn’t want anything from him except to eliminate the threat against him and then get the hell away from him.
“Let’s go,” was all I said, though, and then I turned away, not really caring if he followed.

Twist of Fate Book 1

SYNOPSIS
He promised to never leave me. But when I needed him the most, that was exactly what he did…

From Bestselling Authors Sloane Kennedy & Lucy Lennox comes an exciting new series about how a twist of fate can change everything…

He promised to never leave me. But when I needed him the most, that was exactly what he did…
Wilderness guide Xander Reed has spent fifteen years trying to forget the night he turned to his best friend in his darkest hour, only to find the young man who’d sworn to always have his back was turning his on Xander instead. Two thousand miles and fifteen years of building a new life in the quiet backcountry of the Rocky Mountains should have been enough to put the memory of Bennett Crawford out of his mind forever, but old wounds run deep and when Bennett suddenly reappears in his life as part of a wilderness expedition Xander is guiding, the scars he thought long healed break wide open.

I’d only ever wanted to protect Xander from getting hurt again. I never considered the one he needed protection from was me…
Bennett Crawford was faced with an impossible choice the night his best friend needed him.

He chose wrong.

As the only son of one of the wealthiest families in New England, he should have had the world at his feet, but losing his best friend at the tender age of fourteen changed everything. And even though Bennett’s managed to hide behind a mask of contentment as he takes his place at his father’s side in the family business, inside he’s searching for the piece of himself that’s been missing ever since Xander Reed walked out of his life. Bennett’s only saving grace is his work with a group of inner city kids, and when he’s given the chance to show the troubled teens that there’s a bigger world out there waiting for them if they just have the courage to reach for it, he takes it.

But when he steps off that bus for what was supposed to be a week of fun and adventure, he’s instantly returned to the past when he discovers their expedition guide is none other than the boy he let go so long ago. Only, the soft-hearted, insecure little boy Bennett once knew is gone, and in his place is a brooding, bitter man who isn’t interested in second chances.

People leave. I know that now and nothing Bennett has to say to me will change anything…
All Bennett wants is another chance to show Xander that friendship was only the beginning. But when a stubborn Xander refuses to even hear him out, Bennett realizes he’s going to need to fight dirty.

Because now that he’s found Xander again, he’s not letting him go a second time…

***No cliffhangers***

Lost and Found is the first book by the fabulous writing team of Sloane Kennedy and Lucy Lennox. I have read multiple books by Sloane but this is my first by Lucy and I loved it! It’s fresh, funny, sexy, emotional and a second chance romance, my favorite! Kennedy and Lennox know how to write sexy, vulnerable heroes who are strong, intelligent and determined. Lost and Found is Bennett and Xander’s story. It’s been fifteen years since they’ve seen each other. Xander has tried to forget his best friend, Benny, and how he hurt him all those years ago. He’s successful and loves his job, but he’s not really happy. When Bennett and the group of kids show up for their week long wilderness adventure, Xander is their guide. Xander is still mad, brooding and appears to hate Bennett. A lot. But, Bennett is going to make this right. He’s sorry for how he hurt him when they were younger. He made the wrong decision and he lost his best friend. Xander wants nothing to do with Bennett or his apologies. He’s here to teach these kids and do his job. But, when you’re out in the middle of nowhere, there’s no place to hide. Can Xander forgive Bennett for breaking his heart? Will Bennett let Xander walk away again? I loved this story! I laughed, cried, got hot and bothered and swooned. These men are sexy and I love their banter! It’s a love/hate/love and it’s perfect. The secondary characters are all fantastic and I can’t wait for their stories. Overall, it’s about getting a second chance and doing everything in your power to not waste it. Who says you don’t meet the one when you’re a kid? Sometimes you just need to follow your heart and it will show you the way.

The next think I knew his mouth was crushing down on mine. It wasn’t a peck or a brush of lips, or even a kiss.

It was a claiming. An owning. An absolute possession of my mouth.

That wink.

That goddamned heart-stopping, soul-sucking, perfect wink that I felt like I’d been waiting a lifetime to see again.

EXCERPT

This time when Xander turned back, the look in his eyes was a cross between hatred and anguish, and it hit me right in the gut. I wanted to double-over with the pain of it, but I stood frozen instead.
“What part aren’t you getting, Bennett? I don’t want you here. I don’t want to talk to you. I don’t want to even fucking look at you.” Xander squeezed his eyes closed for a moment before pinning me with a hard look. “You know what? Be with him. I thought maybe you deserved better, but I realized I don’t know you. Maybe I never really did. Maybe you two are perfect for each other. For all I know, you like guys like that. The one thing I am certain about is that I don’t want anything to do with you anymore, Bennett Crawford, so just leave me the hell alone.”
I stood there staring at him, knowing I’d had a strong hand in changing the sweet, quiet boy I’d known into this angry, bitter man, but I couldn’t quell the frustration that went through me, either. I felt like a raw, open wound and my self-preservation instincts kicked in.
“Fine. I’ve been turning myself inside out to talk to you and apologize for what happened that night, but if you’re so hell-bent on pushing me away, I guess that’s it then.”
I turned back toward camp before stopping and clenching my fists. As usual, I couldn’t stop it there. “Just for the record, I’m not fucking Aiden. We’re just friends.”
“Whatever,” Xander mumbled. “Like I care.”
Seriously? I whipped back around and stalked closer to him, fighting the tears of anger I could feel building. “What the hell happened to you? When did you become such a jackass?”
Xander stood back up from where he’d been squatting by the stream to fill his bottle. He took two giant strides toward me until his chest was practically pressed up against mine. His familiar cobalt eyes glinted in the dim moonlight streaking through the trees.
“The night you closed the door on me,” he said without any kind of hesitation at all.
My chin trembled and I begged the fucking tears to stay put, even if they had to cling to my eyeballs by nothing but a sheer force of will.
“I hate you,” I said. It came out as more of a sob than an accusation and I felt myself wince at the sound of it.
“The feeling is mutual,” he rumbled. “Join the fucking club.”
I turned again to leave but he grabbed me by the elbow and spun me around, pushing my back up against a nearby tree. “Why do you keep trying to fix this?” he barked in my face, clearly frustrated.
My traitorous dick began to throb at his nearness, even though my self-preservation instinct was telling me to run. “Because… because I want…” My eyes cast downward at the ground. “I want…”
“What do you want, Benny?” It was like a whisper, a caress that I felt all the way into my gut and down into my balls. He stepped forward as he waited for my answer. His chest brushed mine and I felt his fingers stroke my neck before his entire hand came to rest on the side of my throat. I could feel him trembling as he applied just the tiniest bit of pressure. His eyes closed like he was in pain or something and I felt my own lids slide shut because I knew I was the cause of all that hurt and rage.

You, I thought. God, all I ever wanted was you.

MEET THE AUTHORS

After enjoying creative writing as a child, Lucy didn’t write her first novel until she was over 40 years old. Her debut novel, Borrowing Blue, was published in the autumn of 2016. Lucy has an English Literature degree from Vanderbilt University, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the years and years of staying up all night reading tantalizing novels on her own. She has three children, plays tennis, and hates folding laundry. While her husband is no shmoopy romance hero, he is very good at math, cooks a mean lasagne, has gorgeous eyes, looks hot in his business clothes, and makes her laugh every single day.

Lucy hopes you enjoy sassy heroines and sexy heroes as much as she does. Happy reading!

LIVE NOW!!

Redemption

The Protectors #8
By Sloane Kennedy

Hosted by Jo&Isalovebooks Blog

My job is to save lives. But what if the one that needs saving is the one I was sent to take?
At 33 years old, Phoenix Jones once had a stellar military career ahead of him. But when tragedy struck his family, he walked away from the path he’d chosen to be there for the one who needed him most. Except fate is a bitch and when she once again takes Phoenix’s future in the cruelest of ways, he must find a new path.
When a former army buddy introduces him to Ronan Grisham, the leader of an underground vigilante group, Phoenix knows he’s found a new family and nothing and no one is going to take that from him again. So when Ronan asks him to shadow a young man who participated in a brutal crime against Ronan’s husband, Seth, when he was a child and appears to be targeting him again, Phoenix doesn’t even hesitate for a second.
Even knowing what he must do if the young man proves to have gone back to his old ways.
Because family is everything…

I can’t come back from what I did. I’m not sure I even want to…
An ugly childhood left Levi Deming with little to do but dream of a day when he’d be free of his tormenters so he could carve out a simple life for himself, preferably somewhere far away from the family who never let him forget he was less than human. But one terrible choice at the tender age of 16 changed everything…
Wracked with guilt for the role he played during a home invasion gone horribly wrong, a now 24-year-old Levi is trying to piece together a life where he can maybe do a little bit of good, even knowing it won’t make up for the lives he helped take and it definitely won’t give back the future he stole from the young man whose agonized screams still haunt him night after night. If it were only about him, he’d walk into the nearest police station and happily tell them to lock him up and throw away the key.
But it isn’t just about him anymore…

I expected to find a hardened criminal. What I found was something else entirely…
With Ronan’s orders to terminate young Levi if he so much as even jaywalks, Phoenix expects an easy job with one clear outcome. But when a violent encounter forces Phoenix to interact with Levi, he quickly realizes the case might not be as black and white as he thought. Instead of finding a criminal with no conscience, Phoenix discovers a young man battling impossible odds and near crippling guilt.
When his feelings of disgust and anger begin to fade and turn into something else, the would-be hitman is forced to make a terrible decision between the family he needs and the young man more intent on seeking judgement than redemption.

Kara's Review

5 Stars

Redemption by Sloane Kennedy is the newest book in the Protectors series. This is one of my all-time favorite series’. They are all mm romance, but they are all filled with emotional situations, strong and vulnerable men and sometimes difficult subject matter. Sloane’s writing is so fantastic that she never gives us more than we can handle. Her stories are always written with grace, love, heat, sexiness, family and a dash of humor. The perfect recipe for greatness, as always. Over the course of this series, Sloane has quickly become one of my favorite go-to-authors. I drop everything I’m doing to read one of her books. My only regret is not having discovered her sooner! Redemption is Phoenix and Levi’s story. We’ve known Phoenix for a while now. He’s big, quiet and there’s always been something sad behind his eyes. He’s hired to follow and watch Levi, a man who had a part in the tragedy that changed Seth’s life. Phoenix quickly learns that things aren’t what they seem. Levi is a scared, vulnerable man. He’s not a threat. But, he’s there to do a job and getting emotionally involved with Levi could cost Phoenix his new family. Is it a risk he’s willing to take for love? Will Levi finally discover he’s worth being loved? I loved this story! Phoenix and Levi are an unlikely match who are just perfect for each other. They bring out the other’s strengths and they finally learn what it means to love. I love this Protectors family so much and I can’t wait for more.

“I’m going to do the thing.”

“No,” he said with a laugh. “You don’t have to'”

I ignored him and said, “Thanks for coming over.”

“What we just did is going to fuel a lot of fantasies tonight and for the foreseeable future.”

Excerpt

Father O sobered and then turned his attention on Levi. I watched his fingers curl around Levi’s chin. “Put some ice on these,” he said as he carefully fingered the bruised skin. “You know where to find me.”
Another nod from Levi. I expected it was yet another one of their silent conversations. The priest got up and left the room. Levi shifted and pushed the blankets off his body before swinging his legs over the side of the bed.
“You shouldn’t lie to a priest,” he murmured.
His observation was a surprise, but I didn’t bother to deny it. It had been a pretty lame argument.
“Why were you really in that alley?” he asked.
“That’s not really what you want to ask me, is it?” I countered.
An uncomfortable sensation floated through my chest as I watched Levi bend his upper body over his legs and let his clasped hands dangle just above his knees. His demeanor was much like what it had been in the alley after the rough blowjob.
“If you tell me who he is, I can help you,” I said, shocking even myself. But every time I tried to remind myself that this guy deserved everything he got, I saw him spitting out that cum, his eyes empty, his body broken. It was like he’d accepted that all he’d ever be was some guy who belonged on all fours in a dirty alley surrounded by garbage, waiting for the next man to come along and use his body.
As much as I detested him for what he’d done to Seth and his family, I’d seen enough in the last hour to know he hadn’t walked away unscathed. But I also still had more questions than answers. And the bottom line was that I didn’t believe in making people suffer for their crimes. I’d joined Ronan’s team to make sure justice got served, not to inflict the same torment on my marks that they’d inflicted upon others. Maybe it was a fine line that separated me from the monsters I hunted, but it was there just the same and I knew what side of it I wanted…no, needed to be on.
Levi hung there dejectedly for a moment before saying, “You should go, Phoenix. I really appreciate what you did for me in the alley, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to be here.”
When he got up to leave, I grabbed his wrist to keep him next to me. He shuddered and I heard him let out a wisp of air, but he didn’t try to pull free of me. On the one hand, I was glad he wasn’t fighting me, but on the other, I kind of wished he would.
“Why not?” I asked. “Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Levi finally lifted his head and turned to meet my gaze. My heart hurt for him as I saw the tears pooling there. “Because I’d be too tempted to take you up on your offer. What you saw out in that alley…I deserved it…I earned it,” he whispered. His tears fell and he pulled free of my hold so he could dash them away. He let out a wet-sounding laugh. “Father O keeps telling me God’s watching over me…that he loves me no matter what and he’ll forgive me for all of my sins.” Levi shook his head. “I don’t have the heart to tell him God gave up on me a long time ago.”
I let him go when he stood and left the room.
Because no matter what, I wasn’t going to tell the man I’d been sent to kill that his life was worth fighting for.

Even if the tiniest part of me was beginning to wonder if maybe it was.

Description

“She wants to get Wilde. She should be careful what she asks for.” –Ethan Wilde

There are worse things in life than owning a thriving business in the heart of Manhattan and being labeled one of the Big Apple’s most eligible bachelors. Trust me, I know. I’ve had some bad $h!t go down before I got to where I am.

No matter what curve balls life lobs at me, I take a swing. If I strike out, I learn, adjust, and make the best of it. For instance, when an injury ended my dream of playing in the Bigs, I could’ve sunken into self-pity. When my fiancée dumped me about thirty seconds after the major league scout did, I could’ve become a drunk. Instead, I got off my ass, finished my senior year of college, and put the degree my baseball scholarship earned me to work.

Seven years later, I’m living a new dream. I’m single, well off, and about to take my business to the next level. I’ve got plans for A Pound of Flesh Fitness gyms to open nationwide.

Except the one person standing between me and my dream has become a fantasy. A hot, redheaded fantasy. My competition…my business enemy, is five feet nothing and packed full of dynamite, and I can’t get her out of my mind or my fantasies. Her sexy as sin body, her sultry voice, and her bold personality that’s just as fiery as her hair may have gotten under my skin, but there’s no way I’ll let her stay there.

Because no one gets to Ethan Wilde.

There’s just one little detail I can’t stop wondering about. The one thing that has brought men down since the beginning of time. I can’t leave it alone until I know for sure: Is she a true redhead?

Bestselling author Shelly Alexander brings you this brand new series of super sexy, sizzling hot heroes. It’s a fun, flirty, and dirty series written in the male POV.

If you like your romance hot and fun, then grab a comfy spot under a fan and enjoy! If you like them sweeter with a touch of steam, try Shelly Alexander’s Red River Series.

Sandra's Review

5 Stars

Get Wilde is the third book in the Checkmate, Inc. series. Each book can be read as a standalone since they are each about a different couple. This is the second book I have read in the series and I met Ethan Wilde in Rookie Moves. He met the men of Checkmate, Inc. back in college and now they are great friends and the men work out in Ethan’s gyms around Manhattan. Well…this is Ethan’s story. And it’s about to get twisted…
Ethan Wilde has one rule. One rule that hasn’t broken in seven years. He will only give you one night of pleasure. He will make it the night of your life. He is a gentlemen after all. He always tells you the deal before the real deal happens. The only thing he will promise is that you won’t be left unsatisfied. Over and over again. When he laid eyes on a sexy redhead in the bar, he knew she wasn’t his type. She looked like a nice girl. The kind you bring home forever. He didn’t want forever. And after the talk…he wanted that one night but it wouldn’t happen. But he couldn’t get something off his mind for the next few days. Was she a true redhead? He didn’t think he would ever find out. That was until she entered his gym. As the competition. He knew he now had even more reason to stay away. He was totally fucked.
Adeline McAllister needs to win Weekend Warriors. It’s her chance to get her life back together after being screwed by her ex. She needed the million dollar prize to keep her Yoga Studio open. The only person in her way is Ethan Wilde. The man that she has been fantasizing about since the night she met him at the bar. The coach of the other team. The coach that will be helping her train. She is determined to kick his ass but can she do that while wanting his sexy ass in her bed? Utility closet. Gym mat. Anywhere she could have him. She has to keep her head in the game. She also isn’t ready to trust another man even one with this spark between them. Yep. She was screwed.
Ethan and Adeline’s (Red as he calls her) relationship is one filled with sexually charged banter, hefty competition, and an obsession with pretzels. They also have respect for each other. Even though she is Yoga instructor. Yes. He is a dick about that at first. She surprises him in so many ways that he is stunned silent at times. I loved this about them. She doesn’t put up with any of his shit. She knows her worth and he has to prove that he is worth it. Will he break his one rule for this pretzel loving Yoga instructor?
Overall…I fucking loved every minute of it. It’s fun, hot, and emotional. It’s one of the sexiest books I read by Shelly. She gave us  the goods with this one. The characters are lovable. Exciting, hilarious, and feisty. I even teared up. I didn’t see that coming but it happened.
Quotes:
“I might be nice.” She gives me a sly smile. “But I always play to win.”
I return the smile in spades. “So do I, Red. So do I.”
“Is the music appropriate for the occasion? I can change it if you want.” He gives me a shit-eating grin.
Do you sext all the girls you sleep with?
I chuckle and type.
No. And we’re not sexting. If we were, you’d be half way to an orgasm.

The Protectors #7
By Sloane Kennedy

“I trusted once. I won’t make that mistake again…”
An ugly childhood and devastating betrayal have left 25-year-old Cain Jensen scarred inside and out. Protecting himself means keeping everyone at arm’s length and protecting others means never getting emotionally involved. In the three years since he’s joined an underground vigilante group, every life he saves helps ease the guilt of the ones that were lost to him so long ago. So when he’s sent to a remote cabin in the Cascade Mountains just north of Seattle to follow up on the disappearance of his boss’s co-worker, his only thought is to see that justice is served, no matter what the circumstances.
But nothing he’s ever experienced has prepared the cold-hearted and very straight Cain for who he finds on that mountain…or the intense need to suddenly offer more than just protection.

“I’ve finally managed to break free, but I’ve never felt more trapped in my entire life…”
Ethan Rhodes has been running for six months, but it’s never fast enough, it’s never far enough. At 30 years old, the talented ER Doctor should be spending his days saving other people’s lives, not worrying about his own. But he knows that the four years of physical and emotional abuse he’s suffered at the hands of his volatile ex are nothing compared to what will happen when Ethan runs out of places to hide, especially after taking something from the man he once was sure would be the love of his life.
A violent episode that has Ethan narrowly escaping death leads to a quiet cabin in the mountains where his battered body will have time to heal before he and the young girl relying on him need to run again. But everything changes with the arrival of a mysterious stranger who threatens to give Ethan something he’d finally accepted was gone forever…hope.

“I didn’t see this coming. I don’t think he did either…”
To get to the truth, Cain must first get through Ethan’s defenses, but watching the other man’s walls start to come down forces Cain to face his own past. And as the tremulous connection between the two men grows and gives way to something more, both will need to decide if they’re willing to risk giving each other the one thing that has cost them so much in the past…trust.

Will two men who’ve vowed never to let someone close again let down their guard long enough to find each other, or will they let their pasts determine their future?

Revelation is the seventh book in the Protectors series by the immensely talented Sloane Kennedy. I’m at a loss for words to express how much I love this author and her words. She keeps getting better and better. Introducing us to characters who are strong, vulnerable, sexy, haunted, loving, scared and full of secrets. Her writing always takes me on a journey I never knew was possible. It’s not hearts and flowers. It’s not light and easy. But, it’s always gripping, emotional, sexy, and satisfying. These group of Protectors aren’t for the faint of heart. Their job isn’t easy. They’ve all overcome horrible, tragic pasts only to come out the other side and find their forever loves. But the journey is always tough to read. Revelation is Cain and Ethan’s story. We’ve met Cain before. He’s very secretive and he absolutely does not like to be touched. It’s not a small thing either. It’s a deadly decision to even think to put your hands on him. No one knows a lot about him, but Ronan and he’s about to assign him to a new case. Cain has no idea that his life is about to change. Ethan is broken and battered, but he’s not down for the count. He still has fight left in him and he’s not going down without a fight. When Cain sees Ethan and realizes it’s worse than he thought, he’s instantly more than just his protection. There’s something about Ethan that calls to him. Yes, he needs to protect him, but he also needs him and he wants to be needed. Cain has never been attracted to men, but Ethan’s green eyes are his undoing. He’d not only give his life to protect him, he’s not sure he can ever let him go. Ethan has never felt for anyone the way he feels for Cain. It’s not just because he’s protecting him either. It’s on another level. He can’t stop the way he feels and not knowing if Cain feels the same way is painful. Can Cain reveal his secrets and let Ethan help him overcome his fears? Will Ethan always have to be on the run to be safe? I loved this story! It was very tough to read. There’s a lot of triggers, but it’s worth it to see these broken men come together and heal each other. Tragic circumstances brought them together, but love will keep them together. I always knew Cain needed a hug and Ethan was just the man to give it to him!

His scars didn’t exist.

Neither did mine.

We were just two people finding in each other what we couldn’t find in ourselves.

“What’s your favorite color?

“Blue,” he said softly as his gaze held mine. “Soft, pale blue that looks almost silver.” His thumb skimmed the skin next to my eye and I instantly knew why he was looking into them so intently.

“I want to change my answer.”

Excerpt

From Ethan’s perspective…

Another round of tears threatened as I settled my hands on my lap to try and cover my flaccid cock. I kept my eyes on the ground as Cain got the shower going. A sliver of relief went through me when I saw that the owner of the cabin had installed a handrail in the shower. Which meant even if I needed help getting into the shower, at least I’d be able to stand on my own once I was in there.

And that meant only another minute or two of humiliation and then I’d finally have a few moments to myself to try and pull it together.

That was my thought.

Reality, as usual, turned out to be a cruel bitch.

Because as soon as I latched my hands on the rail and Cain removed his arm from my waist, my knees buckled. I would have hit the tile had Cain not had the reflexes he had.
I lost it at that point. I was just done.
Utterly done.
The sobs crawled up from my belly so painfully that no amount of wishing them away would have mattered.
I had nothing left.
I stood there, naked and broken with water raining down on me and finally wished Eric had finished what he’d started yesterday.
He’d won.
Even if I was still pulling oxygen into my lungs, he’d won.
I let my knees buckle hoping Cain would just let me slide to the ground and leave me there in peace, but I wasn’t that lucky. I waited for him to pull me back out of the shower, but he didn’t. Nor did he say anything. I was barely aware of him shifting his body a few times, but I didn’t have the energy to look at him or even beg him to leave me alone.
All I had was grief.
Grief for everything I’d lost. Grief for the man I’d once been…that foolish, stupid man who’d walked blindly to the gates of hell and begged to be admitted.
Cain finally moved me, but it wasn’t to help me out of the shower. No, it was to move me forward, and to my disbelief, I felt his big body pushing up against me as he climbed in with me, fully clothed.
A new round of wracking, painful cries erupted from my throat at the gesture and I wanted to both tear myself away from him and lean back against him at the same time.
“Shhh, just let it out, Ethan,” Cain whispered and I swore I felt his lips against the spot where my neck met my shoulder. “I’ve got you.”
I shook my head because I couldn’t let myself believe that.
That he had me.
